Summary: Blaster Disaster
Review: Once upon a time, a boy bought a Nomad II MG player and he was rightly happy. He had just obtained a piece of technology that would hopefully give him countless hours of crystal clear music and many excellent features.

Then one day things started to go wrong...

After purchasing the docking station to accompany this cool MP3 player (which took several weeks to order in as the boy lived in the Middle East where it wasn't in stock) he quickly took it home to try it out. It didn't work. So he took it back to the shop where, thus was the staff's confidence in the product, they proceeded to plug it into every power outlet available (into which their own devices were plugged and working perfectly) to ensure that it wasn't the fault of the socket - alas to no avail.

Finally they conceded there was a problem so the docking station COMPLETE WITH THE PLAYER had to be sent to Singapore for a 3 month warranty draining vacation during which the boy had no use of the player.
It came back apparently working fine.
A while later the unfortunate boy noticed some annoying background noise during operation and so the player had to be handed in for repair again. This time they managed to fix it without sending it to Singapore and for that the boy was grateful.

HOWEVER

Not long after THAT the docking station again stopped functioning correctly and the boy was informed that it would again have to be sent to Singapore this time at his own expense!

---

I have written to Creative America, Asia and Europe and the management here in Dubai. NOTHING positive or helpful has been done. During the player's globetrotting I had no use of it and whilst it was working I NEVER used it in any strenuous situation. It was never mistreated and yet it still broke. How can this be called, "Music on the Go"? I propose a change to the more honest, "Fuzzy noise on the Go" as anything else is basically false advertising.

Yes the warranty has expired but only because it spent three months of its warranty period in Singapore. I have not been shown any kind of empathy and I recommend that people rethink before purchasing. Companies like IRiver offer SUPERB MP3 players (Several of my friends have purchased them).
I do not expect to pay the kind of money I paid and be told that I'll have to dish out more money in order to get it fixed. If Creative had their way, my MP3 player would soon rack up more air miles than I have.
On principle I'd rather throw it away and buy a new device from another company even if it cost more than the proposed repairs.

Though this is only one person's tale of woe, my point is this:

With a big company like Creative, some products will inevitably have problems. Some customers such as myself may even be unfortunate enough to experience several problems. I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is the complete lack of customer care and the non-existent technical support I have been offered. Creative America and Europe wrote back immediately saying I was not under their jurisdiction. Creative Asia have not written back 3 weeks down the line.

They like to waste your time at Creative.

Summary: Good sound quality but user interface needs improvement
Review: Overall the Nomad IImg is a good player. The audio quality is great and the FM radio feature is a real plus. However the device has a number of annoying design flaws. All of the controls are located on the side panels of the player making it very difficult to use when running or working out. Moreover, the "erase" button is located prominently causing not just a few instances of "oh my god I almost..."

Also, I learned the hard way that you cannot overcharge the batteries. I left my device on the charger too long and it sizzled the batteries. Off the shelf batteries do not work in the charger and I had to order a new set of Creative's own rechargeables. Again, nothing major just slightly annoying.

Once you get past these small problems the player works fine. I just hope someone in their user interface or design department considers how people actually use these devices in real life.

Summary: a UNIQUE piece of player out there !!!!!! excellent
Review: Samsung Yepp and Nomad II MG both had a recorder and an FM tuner, if your looking for those features Nomad has both, the Intel player has radio only with 10 presents however Rio has voice recording only. Nomad has 32 Presets not 20 as shown here, the advantage it has over the yepp that it comes with rechargable batteries and a docking station, the buttons are easy to use, i dont find the display small, its funky and stylish and the text is not small it scrolls over the screen. The audio effects and quality is GREAT ! and the battery life is amazing. One more thing that the memory is internal that keeps u with an option of expanding over that not replacing it cuz it has one mem slot!. However forget about the folding ear phones they just dont fit correctly, and thec arrying case covers the buttons which makes it useless although the player needs a case cuz it scartches easily. but the player is AMAZING!!

Summary: Sounds great! Looks great!
Review: Sounds great! Looks great! Value for money.

My review:

Pros:

1.Exceptional sound quality. 2.Upto total 192MB of memory (64 inbuilt and 128 add-on) 3.Shirt pocket size 4.Included rechargable batteries and charger 5.Firmware upgradable 6.Intuitive interface. Was able to operate all the functions of the player even without having to read the manual.

Cons (A lot of these would rather be recommendation): 1.120-volt AC adapter. Should rather have a universal 120-240V adapter

2.Buttons on the side make it difficult to hold the player with pressing a button 3.Simple leather case. Makes it difficult to access the controls. Would prefer a transparent cover which would show off its great looks and allow me to see and use the buttons without having to take it out of the case. I haven't yet purchased the wired remote but hope that when you are using it, you can lock the controls on the player body using the lock switch on the body. 4.The volume of the voice and radio recording is quite low. You really have to turn on the volume high to hear everything clearly. 5.Even stereo FM transmissions are recorded in voice-quality mode. Thus even though you get more recording time, you lose the quality. I would rather prefer that the recording quality should be user-selectable. 6.The microphone also seems to be weak, only being able to pick up sounds in very close proximity. 7.The interface socket on the Docking Station is VERY FLIMSY. I am just afraid that it'll break one day if I am not VERY careful while docking and removing the player. 8.The contact clips in the battery compartment are really primitive. Not being of spring type, you might have to unbend the contacts a bit to make sure that the battery is firmly in place. 9.My package(US purchase) didn't contain the MP3 contents CD. Package contents should be standardized and consistent. 10.Creative should be considering putting in an automatic volume level controller. Since different songs are recorded with different volume level, one has to rush for the volume switch every so often. 11.It IS expensive

Summary: Great product missing some small features.
Review: The best part about this device is the addition of the FM radio, which a lot of other tuners lack. A couple of quirks that prevent me from giving it 5 stars include the lack of "random" play of the MP3s (sure, loading 64MB of songs is great, but having to listen to them in the same order every time isn't), and the lack of a belt clip. The headphones are pretty weak, and for the money that people are paying, creative should have went with an acceptable $ pair of Sony's....

Summary: Good Player, Bad Docking Station, Bad Company
Review: The player seems to work fine, although the interface is a bit awkward but you get used to it quickly.

My biggest gripe is the docking station. I'm on my second one. With the first one, the little connection broke after just a few uses. After the long hassle of RMA's from the on-line company (not Amazon) that I bought it from, I got the new one, plugged it in and didn't play with it for a few months.

After a few months have passed (and the short, 90 warrenty) I used it twice. Most of the time it just sat in the docking station next to my computer on my desk. Recently, when I wanted to start using it again, I noticed that the charge light no longer came on. I called Creative (toll call, on hold for a while), told them of the problem, they want me to pay for shipping, pay them $20 to diagnose their problem, and then have me pay for the replacement part and the shipping. I've used the new one all of three times and it is in brand new condition. And they won't ship the new part until they get the old! Even though I am paying for it! Lame.

I give the player good marks, but the docking station has quality issues and Creative Labs has severe support issues. I will never buy a CL product again.

Summary: Sounds great, but software seriously flawed
Review: This technological marvel sounds great! Even with the cheapie earphones it comes with it sounds great; I got some Koss sportapro's, and it sounds even better (but these headphones aren't too conpact).

But, the software suc .... oops, is seriously flawed. On initial install from the CD-ROM I could not get the UBS thing to load and had to jump thru all kinds of hoops to get it to work. Sounded good when it was working. About a week later (I've had the product for about 10 days by this time) the thing crashes, and crashes my computer. Well a couple of days and several phone calls to some computer-knowledigble buddies, visits to the Nomadworld.com web site, it is still not working. (Incidentally, the manual and website FAQs are very superficial, i.e., worthless.)

On Monday I call the tech help people (open only on weekdays, 9-5 CST, no 800-number). After the usual 20 - 30 minute wait I get some very good assistance from a guy named Josh ... and later a guy named Russell. Both of these guys were polite, interested and knowledigble about their machine and computers in general. But, in the end, I am told that I have a "flawed" product, and that I should talk to my reseller about a replacement.

So, in summary, when this thing works, it sounds GREAT !!! But, the software is LOUSEY, and therefore the Nomad doesn't make any sounds, regardless of how many great mp3 files you have ripped or downloaded. If you like being frustrated by software that doesn't work, and bothering friends trying to get it to work, and waiting on the phone for the help desk to answer, and returning faulty products, then get one of these things. If you don't like to do any of those things, wait til the manufacturer figures out how to write software that works.

Summary: 4 month repair and poor customer service
Review: We bought a Nomad II MG as a Christmas gift.

Unfortunately, we received a defective unit.

Creative Labs had us send in the docking station only, and then when that came back unrepaired...they had us send in the entire unit.

But at least Creative said they would expedite the second repair and send us better headphones or memory to make up for the two repair attempts and shipping costs.

That second repair was at the end of Febuary.

Today, April 24, 2001 we were finally told that the unit will ship back to us. 4 months and $36.00 in shipping later, we hopefully will get a working MP3 player.

Creative Customer however reneged on their promises to send better headphones or memory.

I am disappointed with this level of warranty and customer service...and will not make my Creative Labs product my first choice in the future.
