Summary: Best printer I've ever owned
Review: This printer has been performing flawlessy for me for about a year now. The print quality has not degraded in any way--there are no stripes or other artifacts common to aging ink printers. The color and resolution of the pictures that come out of this printer are easily on par with lab prints (that is, assuming your source is up to snuff--I'm using a Canon S45 4-megapixel camera and printing primarily at 4x6). That alone would have been good enough for me, but it also turns out to also be surprisingly fast for a photo printer and very quiet too. The separate ink tanks are also great economically, as I find I go through yellow about twice as fast as cyan, with magenta somewhere in between. All in all, this printer has been one of my most satisfactory electronics purchases in recent memory. HOWEVER I can't stress strongly enough the necessity of using Canon paper. I've tried every brand, and none can compare to the Canon Photo Paper Pro with this printer. In a pinch, Epson paper works OK, but all others yield fuzzy, grainy pictures.

Summary: Can't really fault it, but with the newer models, I wish....
Review: I've had my printer for 3 months and am happy enough with it. It setup easy, haven't had any problems with it gumming up or causing any lines on my photos. I don't print photos from a digital camera, but from my own scanned prints and they come out okay. Okay in that I can send some copies to family members, but I think if I was a real photography freak, I would want better. I was VERY disappointed recently when I purchased a pack of 5 x 7 photo paper by Canon. I had a photo I wanted to enlarge and NOWHERE in Canons print menu could you choose a 5 x 7 sheet of paper to print on. WHAT!!! That is not an odd size. There is a custom size you can enter, but then I can't get the printer to make it a borderless print, in other words the 5 x 7 paper will come out with a 3 x 5 photo printed on it. Waste that I don't like. It might be that somewhere there is a way to do it, but if so, Canon sure doesn't make it easy for you to figure out how. I just saw the new i860 and it prints 5 x 7's. Sigh, I just guess I can't have everything.
Okay, its a few days later now from when I whined about the above problem, and I found a way to custom size the menu to print on 5 x 7's, so it is possible, glory be! Also I remember when I decided to get this one, I was worried about the normal printing quality of text as it was never mentioned much in reviews. No need to worry on that, the text printing looks great. I think this printer is almost obsolete by now with the new i860, but if you get a good deal on this one, you won't regret it.

Summary: Fast But Speed Is Not Everything...
Review: I just purchased this printer in New Zealand. I got it a little cheaper than usual as they are an end of line item I hear. I had read rave reviews before purchasing. As soon as I got it set up and the print head aligned I printed out a couple of test photos using Canon Photo Paper Plus glossy they were lovely prints but they had faint scratches on them , no doubt from a set of rollers in the unit, they were spaced apart as per the small nylon rollers. The scratches did not run the entire length of the paper, just appeared in patches.
Then cleaned and cleaned again and did another print and I got the same tiny scratches and also got sort of bands running accros the page...noticable mainly on blue areas. I have tried more clean cycles, but all I'm doing is wasting expensive paper and ink..for about 1 or 2 good prints in say 7. Using A4 photo Paper Pro this is way too wasteful. I'll return the printer next week and try find something less flash and fast but that is hopefully more consistant.
It is fast and silent and looks cool, and I find the simple software easy to use.

Summary: Print Head problems
Review: We bought 2 of these i850's January, 2003 and the one printers print head started mulfunction mid September,2003. We can take it back to the dealer but it defeats the object--it is suppose to be a good printer. The second printer was working well till last week and now started with the exact same problem--it prints different shades of blue in the same passage. We cannot afford to go without it and are thinking of going to a different brand or more reliable printer. So may be you would like to buy a printer that function well for very low volume and "now and then" printing. It is not working for us! In the beginning it was fine but 9-months down the line.....

Summary: Simply Superb
Review: I use the Canon i850 printer with my Canon D60 (6 MP) camera. Simply stated, I get lab quality results on my photographs with the printer. I have been very happy with the prints, but I must provide two items that are of special concern. First, I have had disasterous results with ink refill kits. While the generic inks work fine, the refill inks have been problematic, resulting in clogged jets and flat looking photos. Second, the use of Canon paper is highly recommended. Kodak papers result in photos that tend to lack details, almost as if the ink was not fully absorbed by the paper. IBM papers work okay, but lack the glossy quality of the Canon paper. I have not tried the Epson, HP, or generic brands since I have come to rely on the Canon quality and after a point the experimentation just isn't worth the bother.

Summary: Fast and Top Quality - Take it from a PRINTER
Review: I have owned all the other brands, these new Canons with the 4 seperate color cartridges are about the fastest performers and least expensive to replace cartridges. I used to own 3 AB Dick offset printing presses and with todays technology all of my printing is now done on these printers. In the past 2 years I have owned the s750, i850, and I just purchased an i550 because my 750 just crapped out on me, when I use them I really put them through the ringer, literally thousands of copies are produced on these printers in my small print shop. Since I have converted to these printers I have sold off all of my heavy printing presses and equipment and now I can get even BETTER quality text, photo, and color registration without the messy setup of a press. I have been a commercial printer for more than 20 years and if these printers pass my standards for quality text, color, and photos you know they're good. I produce letterheads, envelopes, carbonless invoice forms, postcards, brochures, all with color or photos and with the Canon programs I can adjust colors and photos easily. I am always running 2 of these printers at the same time from one computer, if I had the space I would set up a couple more and run all of them at once.

Summary: Test your i850 AS SOON AS YOU BUY IT!!, 9-29-03 UPDATE
Review: *** UPDATE ****

In my last review, I returned the i850 for credit. Two weeks later I found a i860 WHICH IS GREAT!! I'm glad I returned the i850.

i860: I highly recommend the i860 with "ContrastPLUS": "Canon launches the next evolutionary step in digital printing with the introduction of ContrastPLUS, an advanced 5 color ink system. Offering the best of both worlds, the i860 printer delivers exceptional black text quality with a pigment-based black ink. Plus, it provides true 4 color photo printing with a photo black ink for improved image contrast and overall photo sharpness".

I had complained about image contrast and sharpness and not being able to get true RED. The i860 improved these items except I was not able to get a true RED but at least I could get an orangy-red.

ALSO, this printer comes with EASY-WEBPRINT. I have been looking for this software for YEARS !! EASY-WebPrint: "automatically analyzes and formats web pages so they will print with full color and WITHOUT TRIMMING OFF THE RIGHT-HAND MARGIN. Thank you Canon !!!

Summary: Paper Feed Problems
Review: Constant Paper feed problems.

Summary: Canon Screw-Up
Review: This printer has the worst backloading mechanism. The paper jams. The printer prints everything out of margin. Bad design work. The quality of the print isn't that good easier. A lot of visible "printer" lines. I trust Canon with cameras, but sure won't buy a printer from them anymore.
