Description:

Are you tired of the tinny sound produced by the pipsqueak speakers built into your computer? If so, say adios with a pair of Yamaha NS-U50s, which have been specifically designed to enhance the sound of PCs.

A two-way speaker comprising a 3.5-inch woofer and a 1-inch dome tweeter, the NS-U50 makes a huge improvement over the junky sound we usually hear from our computers. So much so, that now that we know what downloaded music and interviews can be, there is no turning back.

The cabinets are finished in a very attractive cherry-like veneer with white grilles. Though they aren't very large, a pair of NS-U50s does take up some space--certainly more than standard computer speakers--and may require you to rearrange your desktop.

Other noteworthy features include video shielding, a nifty little pair of screw-on stands that angle the speakers slightly upward (and do double-duty as wall-mount brackets), nonskid rubber pads, and a 6-foot pair of speaker cables. Hook them up to Yamaha's AP-U70 desktop receiver and you've got a great sound system.

Sonically, the NS-U50s are clear and warm, and create a nice, large soundfield. Their ability to reproduce vocals are a real strength; the speakers offer good natural balance, while high frequencies sound clean and extended. Although the 3.5-inch woofers are fuller than we expected, they don't produce any real bootie-whumping bass. Additionally, if you overdrive them you'll hear the woofers bottom-out, which can damage them if you're not careful. We suggest complementing them with a subwoofer for deeper, more powerful bass.

Yamaha's attractive little NS-U50s have us spoiled. And once you've heard how good your computer can sound, you'll be spoiled too. --Wayne Garcia
