Summary: a smart purchase indeed
Review: i recived the speakers and now i use them every chance which i get. the bass is produced through a long tube, so it sounds quite a bit deeper than you would think possible. it has better than decent high and mid quality, plus the tubish bass. plus they are quite compact, though you will need some extra pocket space to carry the adapter separately from the speakers, it doesn't fit with the small thin case provided. thats not a problem for me though, since i have a small briefcase thingy to hold my music stuff. also, the batteries seem to last quite a awhile, i've had it for over two weeks so far and they are still not dead. get these if you want excellent portability, and still want quite good sound.

Summary: Big sounds come from small packages
Review: I was in a computer store one day, looking for some external speakers for my home machine. A young salesman came up to me and asked if I need help. I ran down my list of wants (lightweight, good sound, portability), and said the ideally I wanted to get one set of speakers that would work well at home with the computer but detach and travel well with portable systems like my mp3 player and old portable CD.

He looked around, making sure no other sales help was in ear shot, and then recommended I go to another store and get these speakers. He said they would do all I had listed, plus they would run on 4AA batteries or a wall adapter. He said he thought these speakers sounded so good, he owned them himself.

I thanked him, walked the block down the street and bought these speakers. Everything he said has held up as true. Be it a road trip with friends, business travel in a hotel room, or just at home in front of my own computer, these speakers put out clear, clean sound, surprising many technogeek friends with their combo of power and small size. They travel excellently, folding down into a small pouch which holds the speakers and wall adapter. Now, if only I could find headphones that worked as well......

Summary: Great for trips!
Review: I've had mine for a couple of years as of this writing. I never use it at home, just in the hotels when I travel. It works just fine. Sound quality is not great but it gets the job done. I've taken it around the world. Lasts a long time on batteries (for countries w/ different voltages), but also runs on a supplied AC adaptor. The speaker is quite durable - I've dropped mine a number of times (on carpet) and it keeps on ticking. The only problem I have is when I hook it up to my portable DVD player, I have to place it behind the LCD display, which is wider than the speaker so the sound is muffled. Also, the mini headphone jack cable is borderline too short for proper placement of the speaker when using it with the portable DVD player.

Review: OK...get the idea that these are going to be mind-blowing, house shaking, crystal clear hi-fi speakers out of your head. What they are, in fact, is a stylish, excellent source of added volume for any laptop, ipod, or similar device that you wish to listen to "open-air" style. Actually, they are quite loud. Think of your television speakers and you have a good idea of what these sound like. No bass (NONE, ZERO, ZIP), excellent mids and highs, and an overall clarity that is more than sufficient for casual listeners on the go. The design is great. The unit is compact and sturdy feeling. It even comes with a universal power adaptor for international types. So if you want to watch a movie on your laptop and have it super loud, buy these. If you have an ipod and want external speakers, buy these. If you are looking for anything more, stay away. Unfortunately, though, if these dissatisfy you, there aren't many other options.
NOTE: If the volume is too high, these will vibrate and distort. Remember, it is all one unit. You can safely get to 75% volume without distortion.

Summary: Good Sound Relative to the Size and Design
Review: Tonight I bought a set of the SRS-T77 speakers after seeing them online. They caught my interest as I am preparing for a vacation trip where I am carrying along a camcorder, laptop, and MP3 player and thought a little extra boost in sound for all of these devices would be nice; this is particularly true for the laptop when watching DVDs from a sufficient distance away that the built-in speakers are too weak...

In a word, I was pretty surprised at the sound volume that these speakers put out with only 4 AA batteries powering them, and supposedly able to do so for up to 24 hours. I suspect the length of battery life will vary considerably with the volume. In any case, they have pleasing sound for their size but deep bass isn't their forté, being rather clipped off and flat. Again, I wasn't surprised since they are rated only at 100Hz on the low end. What I particularly like is the all-in-one folding design that will pack and travel very well. I'll leave the compact 9v adapter behind and just rely on rechargeable AAs, since I must take them along for other devices also.

If the Sonic Blue SI-5 speakers sound as good or better than these, then I'd say they are a better buy since the Sonys are rather pricey. But, with time being short and these being available, they were my best option. When I want the best sound for listening, I'll opt for my Koss Plug in-ear headphones, but I'll use the Sony speakers otherwise.

Review: UPDATE: I recently purchased Creative Labs TravelSound speakers, I would highly reccomend these over the Sony SRS-T77.

I needed a set of travel speakers that I could take with me to Europe and I just received these today. WoW! Very nice sound & EXCELLENT design for portability and traveling.

The unit is relatively flat with the speakers swiveling out to face the listener, then swiveling back in for packing. It also has what looks like two "bass" tube-type openings on each side, overall the sound is excellent. The unit accepts "AA" batteries and came with a compact AC adaptor styled a "world" AC adaptor given that it accepts varying voltage levels, however the prongs themselves are designed for the US standard. Not what I would call a "world" connector, but very well designed (prongs fold in) and likely to come in handy. The other reviewer's (JazzDiver's) comment regarding 100Hz was a mistaken reference to sound frequency, the 100Hz actually refers to the low range of the 100-240 voltage range the AC adaptor converts from.

Last, the speakers come with their own travel bag, very sleek and compact. If you're looking for amplified portable speakers, I doubt you will be dissapointed.

I considered the SonicBlue speakers, but read the reviews carefully, it looks like an awful lot of people aren't happy with them, despite some (suspicious?) glowing reviews.

One last comment, I purchased these on Sony's website as they don't seem to be available on Amazon.com yet.

Summary: Very nice, could be better
Review: With this size and sound I will bring this with me on all overnight trips. The AC adaptor, 100-240vac, will work in any country (though you need a plug adapter for non-US power sources), and it's small and very light for the power it must deliver (9v 1000mA). That's a real plus, as I have had to carry a separate "wall wart" in the past for Europe/etc.

The sound is more than adequate for music and movies. Decent bass sound, though it won't shake the walls. Volume enough to annoy a neighbor in a hotel if you crank it all the way up (not recommended) though of course not as clean at that volume.

Minor complaints:

When listening to a voice recording, I note that the midrange is not as strong as the bass or treble. As a result it sounds like it's coming from inside a tube (which it is: it's the bass resonator). While I doubt the response is anything like flat, this coloration is not much of a problem when listening to pop music, unless you are a golden-ears. May not be suitable for classical or opera (haven't tried it). It's a bit like the way a boombox sounds (but not as loud). It would sound better with a small midrange driver, but then it would be bigger and heavier.

The nylon carrying bag is thin and won't protect, and there isn't enough room for the AC adapter. It's useful for trapping the cord with the unit and preventing scratches.
