Summary: Horrible interface; excellent value for the money
Review: The good:

Battery life: Using Rockbox, I'm getting well over the 10 hours/charge advertised when I hook the unit up via the USB port and use Media Player to play music from it as if it were just a USB hard drive. Docs say it's powered by AA rechargeables. That may be true, but you need an Alan wrench to change them.

Sound quality: Again, with Rockbox. Decent to very good. Included headphones are useless, though.

Capacity: 20G. Sounds like a lot, but I could fill it several times over. Time to be more selective in what I travel with. I'm also using the jukebox for digital picture storage while I travel. Macally sells SyncBox, which allows USB->USB transfer of files without a computer in a very small, battery-operated package. Very handy; works well so far.

Encodes Audio as MP3: Haven't tried it yet, but supposedly records via an internal microphone or a line in jack.

The Bad:

The interface is pretty klunky. Rockbox has more features, but there's still a learning curve. Rockbox is open source and if it bothers you (me) enough, write your own! Not something you want to be fiddling with at 80mph on the freeway, though. Choose your playlist before you leave, or let a passenger muck with it.

Case: Neoprene case offers basic protection. Not really designed to carry the player while it's in operation - no opening for headphone wire; jukebox has side-mounted headphone jack which doesn't work well inside the case; can't see display or operate controls w/o removing the unit from the case.

No support for pay services. As far as I know, the device doesn't support any DRM-enabled services like iTunes. Didn't matter to me, but may to some.

USB 1.1 transfer speeds very slow. USB2.0 cards cheap ($15!) now, though.

Overall: (...) Meets my needs very well, which included being able to copy pictures from CF memory onto the drive (with accessories) as well as MP3s to listen to while travelling. If MP3 listening were my only consideration, then I would give serious consideration to other devices with better interfaces, even for more money.

Review: 4 star item with another for the price....not a complaint. Most complaints here would prolly be fixed w/ the Rockbox OS. Nuff said!!

Summary: Poor Quality and Poor Customer Service
Review: If you get a unit that works you may be lucky; if you don't, beware. I bought this Archos unit for a friend. It didn't work properly when received so he called Customer Support. During the 18 months he has had the unit, he has sent it back 4 times for repair and it still doesn't work correctly. Initially Archos wanted him to pay for the repair! Each time they required him to mail in the unit with the charger; last time they returned only the unit without the charger. Clearly, Archos Customer Support has problems. Think twice before buying any product from this company.

Summary: Awesome Storage
Review: I have loaded over 4300 songs on my Archos and still have almost 4GB free. The USB 2.0 interface makes for FAST load times. It only took me 25 minutes to load over 14GB of songs.

Summary: Good but loud hard drive
Review: Got this for 2 days now and works well like it is supposed to. Buttons are very sturdy. This version has a white circular sticker with "Special Edition V2" on it. Battery fully charged for the first time in about 4 hours even though the manual stated to charge it for a minimum of 6 hours.
Connecting to the computer and transferring files is very easy on Windows XP using Windows Explorer.

Here are my complaints about this:
When hard drive is running, it makes a high pitch noise and makes this periodic clicking which sounds like a pencil lead lightly tapping on metal. When using it as a recorder for classroom lectures, it picks up these noises. The hard drive is not fast. It takes a while (about 2 seconds) to load a 3MB mp3 file. With it's 2MB built in memory it has to use the hard drive about 3 times per song.

Overall not bad for the price. I worry about the durability with the drive head lightly hitting the metal sides.

Summary: Buyer's Regret: Should have gotten an iPod Mini...
Review: For a 20GB MP3 player, Archos has the best price. I'd rather pay more for the iPOD mini though, after receiving my Archos. The iPod Mini is so much better looking, and of better quality.

This 20GB Archos' MP3 player is probably one of the first MP3 products from Archos. The design was rather immature, and quality poor. In the 2 days after I received this item, I have found many things not working (mostly related to the firmware). It needs better QA.

In addition, the look and feel can be better, as is already reflected in some of Archos' newer products. The unit I have was very heavy, and it looks cheap. Everyone wants to by inexpensive products, but no one want one that looks cheap.

I want something that I can feel happy seeing it everyday I use it, and feel proud when I use it in front of others. That's certainly not this Archos player. I'll get an iPod mini. That's cool...

Summary: For the price of $102 this is 5 stars
Review: I actually picked this up for $72 after $30 discount for signing up for amazon's credit card, but for those who don't want to do that (or already have) the price of $102 after $50 rebate and goldbox discount for a 20 GB MP3 player is stunning. This unit is solid after you update the firmware to the free Rockbox third party firmware. No silly propriety software is needed to transfer files back and forth either. Just plug this into your computer and it works like a portable hard drive. I owned an ipod and the sound quality of this player is as good or better. It's a bit larger than an ipod but it fits into my pants pocket easily and is not too heavy or bulky. Another great quality of this player is you can upgrade it yourself to a 60 or 80 GB hard drive! It uses a standard laptop 2.5" hard drive and it's not difficult to upgrade it. While your friends are putting along with their 40 GB ipod that they paid $500 for, you can pull out your 80 GB mp3 player that you paid half the price for and give them a sly grin. :-) By the way, you can also upgrade the battery to a longer lasting li-ion battery if you choose to. This is the ultimate hobbyist mp3 player.
