Summary: 1394 in general have problems on Windows XP
Review: The card problably is not the problem on Windows XP. For some reason all the 1394 firewire cards can stop working at anytime and are next to impossible to get going again when using Windows XP. My new Dell 2400 /Windows XP Home Ed. with the Dell installed 1394 card does not detect my Panasonic DV camcorder, which worked fine on my old computer using Windows 98. Many other users have this type of problem check the online help boards.

Summary: Different software included
Review: The card worked fine with plug-and-play on XP Home. One concern is that it showed up with a different name in the Hardware Manager than the instructions said it would. However, it seems to work fine.

One slightly annoying problem is that it didn't come as the MGI software that the description claims. I received Sonic MyDVD (misnamed since the demo version you get only creates VCDs, not DVDs) along with Arcsoft Showbiz. Sonic MyDVD wasn't able to burn a VCD on my computer. (It gave me "unknown error"), but the software that came with my camcorder didn't have a problem. Over-all I'm unimpressed with this replacement software, particularly since the bundled software was one of the reasons I bought this card. However, between Windows Movie Maker (that came with my machine) and the software that came with my Sony camcorder, I think I can do everything I need for now.

Summary: THE Firewire Card For WinXP
Review: This card is absolutely painless to install with WinXP. I'm not sure why the other reviewer had a problem (on his Dell), as he shouldn't have. I've installed this card on Dells with no problems at all.

When making other devices compatible with Windows, it seems to me Adaptec is high on Microsoft's list.

If you can get this on sale, go for it. It makes a great addition to your PC.

Summary: Idiot-Proof Installation
Review: Using Windows XP, I simply inserted the card, turned on the PC, and Windows did the rest. As simple as a PCI installation can get. I do not like the included video editing software, but that's not why I bought this.
