Description:

Sony's CFD-577 gets high marks for its good, solid sound and ergonomic layout. It also features a CD, dual-well cassette, AM/FM tuner, remote control, and great equalization features. That you also get quality amplifiers and loudspeakers is the icing on the cake. However, the construction quality of this unit (lightweight plastic, cheap knobs, etc.) is where Sony cuts corners.

The CFD-577 can serve as either a shelf unit or a portable system. The speakers slide and lock neatly onto runners on the sides of the main unit for easy carrying, and the unit is rated for four hours of CD playback on eight D-cell batteries.

Rather than merely tossing a few preset equalized (EQ) curves into the features mix, Sony gives you five separate EQ knobs, each covering a broad range centered at a specific frequency: 10 kHz for the highs, 4 kHz for the mid-highs, 1 kHz for the low highs, 400 Hz for the lower midrange, and--using Sony's Mega Bass system--a knob at 100 Hz to cover the bass region. Between these controls and the Surround Sound feature--which simulates a surround effect through the system's two speakers--we found that we could optimize the playback for any musical style we wanted and in many different environments (close to walls, away from walls, outdoors, etc.).

The CFD-577's front panel is clearly laid out--no triple-function buttons to confuse you here. The compact remote likewise shows its functionality at a glance, granting access to all features except the EQ and the cassette decks. For functionality and pleasing, flexible sound at a great price, the Sony CFD-577 has bargain written all over it.

Pros:

  • Great sound
  • Flexible equalization
  • Ergonomic design

Cons:

  • Low-grade construction
  • Up/down buttons instead of volume knob
