Summary: Excellent quality. Definitely worth it.
Review: Pros:

- Comes with an optical cable.
- Optical recordings are CD quality, I can't tell the difference.
- This thing is TINY. (About the size of three minidiscs)
- The included headphones are actually very decent. I won't be buying a separate pair as I'd originally planned.
- It actually has a sound meter so you know when you're recording source's volume is too high or low.
- Extremely easy to record stuff.

Cons:

- The included lithium battery must be inserted even when using an alkaline battery.
- To use an alkaline battery, you must attach a separate plastic piece. It's small though.
- The lithium battery is proprietary and can only be charged about 300 times. That's still about a year's worth of "everyday, normal" use for me.

I've only had this thing for half a day and I absolutely love it. Using the optical cable, I recorded a few songs from my Sony DVD player to MD and I really couldn't hear a difference. This thing rules.

Recordings made with the Line-In jack are about as good as it gets. There was some very faint background hiss during silence, similar to metal cassette recording, but that may have been due to my equipment.

Something else I noticed... My friend has the Sony R70, which is very noisy when playing a disc. The only time this Sharp player makes any noise at all is when you turn it on (it clicks), switch tracks, and turn it off (it clicks again). It's perfectly quiet while playing a track.

Definitely well worth it's price. It comes with everything you'll need, it's small, easy to use, and excellent quality.

Summary: WHAT WOULD I DO WITHOUT MY MD!
Review: Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder is VERY NICE! I have had mine for 5 months now, I dont know what I would do with out it. I got it in England, so I got the nice little bud headphones ;D I just love hooking it up to my computer and recording my MP3's in one easy step. Just hook it up, set the volume (easly done with the output bar on display), press sync-start and your away, another great thing is the optical recordings! WOW! Just hook it up and your away, no hastle with the volume, I call it a DIGITAL PORT ;D I cant tell the difference between a CD and a optical recording played on my Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder. I just love the way it sits in my hand. I wouldnt say its light though, Id say it is a really good weight, it feels dense and very solid, and the silver finish is just awesome. For those who are wondering if the "record" red button lights up, it doesnt. Optical and Line input are feed through the same hole. It also has a seperate MIC INPUT, but I havnt tried that, the md features all the EDIT FUNCTIONS! you can put titles on your md, and at the touch of a button, it changes the text into "ABC", "abc", "123! ..." . It just makes it look really cool. Also, it features a BASS BOOST! 3 way. The max volume is "30", if you have the bass on "3" and the volume on 28, the bass is automatically cut down to avoid distortion. I recommend the Sharp MDMT821 Ultra-Thin Minidisc Player/Recorder to everyone, looks great, sounds great, and the Li-Ion battery is AWESOME! Charge it when ever you like, un like most cell phone batterys.....

Summary: A very good machine
Review: This is a nice little machine. The sound quality is above average but if you splash out on some good headphones then you will realise that it is not the best. It is a good size and it has all the functions of any other recorder.

Summary: One of the Best!
Review: This is probably one of the best MD players available here in the states. I got mine several months ago and it's still in great shape. I dropped mine on accident a few times, but it still works fine. It's very durable. Also, the sound quality is almost exactly like CD quality. The difference between them is so small, you won't even tell the difference. The maximum volume isn't that loud, but that's not really a problem. Recording stuff is so easy, anybody can do it. The battery lasts pretty long as well. I'd say that you won't need to replace it for quite awhile. Most of the functions are similar to CD players (e.g. repeat, bass boost, etc.). But allowing you to name your MD's and the tracks is very nice. Since the cost of MD's are cheap, you can store hours and hours of whatever you want on them. I only have a few gripes about my MD player though. First, the buttons on the player can get worn out a little if you push them too much. I'd recommend getting a carrying case with the player if you buy it. With it safely in the case, you can use the remote to control most of its functions. That way, your player won't look so worn out. Next, the headphones you get with your player are junk. It'd be better if you got your own. Also, I thought this player would be an exact copy of the Japanese version, but it wasn't. The Japanese version is more silverish on the outside, and so is the remote. But these are only minor things that annoy me. Overall, this player is one of the best you can get for the price offered.

Summary: much better than the sony mz-55
Review: this product is basically the same size as the Sony's smallest md player/recorder, but with much more advantages... First off, Sony always fails to mention that their product is only 16 bit ATRAC, where as the Sharp's is 24 bit. What this simply means is that this product has better sound quality (especially in the mega bass). Also, the Sony's products run not on Lithium-Ion rechargable batteries, which the Sharp does. this means a much longer battery life (Sharp goes about 12 hours with the rechargable battery alone -->Sony's goes about 5 hours). To sum it all up, Sony should be given credit for introducing MD to the world, but they have lost on the competition to many other companies.
