Summary: Good item w/ low price
Review: After going through the instructions, I tried to test this scanner for the first time. At Windows ME, I saw an error message and could not start the job. When I tried this scanner on the Windows XP, it works totally fine. Nice quality on the images. Hope Compaq has a patch file to fix the problem for the Windows ME.

Summary: Finally a USB Scanner that works with Windows XP!!
Review: Although I haven't used this scanner yet - I do plan to purchse it in the near future. The last review I read was very helpful to me. I have purchased (2) other scanners and neither of them will work with Window's XP. One was a Visoneer Paperport 6100 and the other was an older model Visoneer. They worked great with ME and Windows 98. Needless to say I'm very happy to find a scanner that will work with XP at a resonable price.

Now if I can find a camera.. My Polaroid Photo Max 320 will absolutly NOT work with XP. I've tried downloading a driver from the Polaroid website, but nothing works.

Summary: Horrid
Review: Bought a new Compaq PC and S200, took many tries to get it loaded. It worked for about 10 uses, then all I got was a multicolored page. I did all the things advised. Wrote to tech support, got information that did not help. Saw on Compaq opinions MANY with the same complaint. 6 months old and it is worthless at 3 months

Summary: Affordable and gets the job done..................
Review: Easy to use and feature rich, this is the best deal out there. Read the setup instructions thoroughly before trying to install it and you should have no problems.

Summary: Ouch!
Review: Got this model with an all new system but it never worked. The first one only produced a greenish pixel page regardless of what was scanned. After fighting with Compaq they sent a replacement which only produces barcodes regardless of what was scanned. Tried their updated drivers but those worked worse than the originals which froze my system six times during install alone. I was forced to do a system restore in the end after working through a crippled OS to try and remove the drivers. Actually the number two worst experience I've ever had with any computer system or component. Still trying to get Compaq to honor their warranty.

Summary: more than adequate for home use
Review: I bought it for $25 at a clearance. It gives very high resolution scans, with very high quality, but I do not recommnd it for professonal use since the colros are slightly off always (a white becomes blueish for example). It is speedy (about 6 seconds a scan, most of it being taken up by the scaning program), and light to carry (cheap, not much in it, weighs like dictionary). I do have to admit it is extreamly cheaply built. There is like nothing inside it. I dont see any negative effects from it though. If it had a USB 2.0 (instead of USB 1.1) interface I bet it could take a 1200dpi scan in 5 seconds. It has high enough resolution to do OCRing no problem.

The software included with it is barebones, you'll make do, but it is hard and aquward to use, and has a candyied up lame interface. I would get a diffent program to use with it. But since it is so cheap I guess it is justifiable.

I have never had any problems with it except figuring out how to use the candied up interface (I would use a more professional program like Adobe Photoshop with it).

I am really happy with this scanner, and I love that I bought it. I am planning to buy another for the office. But I would not use it for a professional publication.

Summary: It was great until...
Review: I got this scanner in January 2003 from Amazon. It was great, and worked cleanly and smoothly with my Windows ME. I reccomend it for anyone with ME or below, in fact--it was very easy to use and set up. However, don't listen to the claims that Compaq will make about this scanner being able to work with XP: it's not true. I recently upgraded to XP, and checked out the troubleshooting guide at compaq.com, where it says that you can get drivers to make this scanner compatible. It's NOT. They wanted me to reinstall my brand new Windows, which wouldn't really solve anything. Don't get this scanner if you have XP or plan to upgrade to it in the near future, it's not worth the struggle. On the other hand, if you have 98, 2000, or ME, it's an excellent deal and good quality equipment!

Summary: decent product - support documentation missing
Review: I purchased the S200 feeling the price was acceptable considering the brand recognition and scanning resolution. It is my first scanner so comparisons are difficult but the scanned results are probably better than what my monitor and printer can reproduce - so no complaints there. I do have an irritating USB cable connection at the scanner that tends to connect/disconnect with slight movement of the cable. My main irritation however came with the absence of documentation and help menus for the scanner application software. Some of the menu choices that modify color, etc. are not really intuitive- at least not to me, and there is no help menu to explain them. A getting started manual was included but that is pretty much just for connectivity, etc. Trying to wade through the Compaq website for info was really frustrating. After 3 (of what seemed like automated) email responses to inquiries for help I finally gave up. I was directed to their technical chat page and it happened to be offline. I suppose trial and error will have to do. I saw other complaints on their posting board implying that documentation is scarce on their other product lines as well.

Summary: Average Scanner, clunky Pretty Slow at higher Scan Settings
Review: The set-up on this system is easy but I feel the scanner itself is a little clunky and actually quite slow, taking at least 4 minutes to scan at a 1200 settings. The quality of the scans is also not great as compared to my previous HP at the 600 setting. I think this is a good first scanner for student's purposes but as a professional the quality is really not there.
