Description:

The basic features of the Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB scanner are clearly designed and priced for small business and personal use. We really liked the quick-and-easy setup, and in just a few clicks we were on our way to scanning photos, color images, and black text.

Five simple buttons access convenient copy and printing, faxing, and scanning directly into Visioneer's obligingly friendly PaperPort software. After warming up for about 45 seconds, the OneTouch 7600 USB scanner recognizes over 68 billion colors internally with 36-bit color depth. Featuring an optimal 600 x 1,200 dpi and a 2,400 dpi software-enhanced resolution, you will be pleased with its crisp and consistently reliable color and photo-realistic scanning. We found the preset resolutions functional as a means of improving scan speed and creating smaller files, but we chose to change to higher resolutions for all types of scans. The character recognition program (OCR) is a great plus that allows you to scan text, an amendment not found on all basic scanners.

The Visioneer OneTouch 7600 USB scanner is a good choice for a standard scanner in a household with basic usage. It weighs less than 10 pounds and moves easily to a shelf or closet for temporary storage if you're short on desk space. And with one-step setup, this scanner is very practical. It comes with PaperPort software on CD-ROM, Visioneer OCR, PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer, Visioneer's WebPublisher Link, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, all of which install in the first couple of clicks. Finally, it's good to note that the installation guide is eminently readable and useful for problem solving.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Good crisp quality color scanning
  • Very easy to set up and use

Cons:

  • 45-second warm-up each time you scan
  • Not equipped to scan transparencies
  • Relatively slow scan times
  • Some seeming incompatibility with newer editions of Windows 98
