Summary: No Problemo!!
Review: Arrived at 10:25 this morning, unpacked, reviewed manual (took all of 20 seconds) plugged the firewire into my Mac,then into the Yamaha...opened Toast Titanium, and burned a CD..Now THAT's the way I like it! No hastles, no fooling around with manuals...just do it and get to work! Also, this does all they say with regard to speed, reliability, etc. Good job Yamaha! Great price! I saved a bundle on Amazon's offer!

Summary: Super Fast, Super Easy!!
Review: I use this drive with my Dell notebook and a PCM CIA fire wire card. It couldn't be easier to use. The supplied software and Yamaha's 8MB buffer means no coasters.
I highly recommend this product. I know there are faster drives, but reliability with a disc burned in 5 minutes is all I need.
I should point out that since its an external fire wire drive, I have been able to share it with friends...

Summary: not for mac users
Review: I was so excited to get a great deal from Amazon on what I'd heard was a quality burner. As soon as I'd taken my new burner out of the box, however, I immediately started to have problems. First my mac wouldn't recogize the device in OS9 (the platform for the burner software)... ) I finally got my mac to find the burner after I rebooted it in 9 only, but thenthe software wouldn't allow me to drag more than one track into the recording que at a time...

Although this may be a great drive, I really have no way of knowing because I haven't been able to burn cds yet. If you're a mac user, pick a different product.

Summary: A Great Drive- Fast Set-up, Faster Burns
Review: It was time to upgrade from a 4x4x6 USB burner; 20 minutes is just to long to wait for a completed CD. After much research, I chose the Yamaha CRW2200FXZ and have not been disappointed. I own a Dell notebook and hadn't utilized the firewire port until now. Note that this burner includes a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, and if your notebook is like mine, you'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin cable... Set-up was a breeze and went without a problem. I've burned many CDs so far without a single error - the massive 8mb buffer should guarantee against those buffer-underrun ruined discs forever. There is also plenty of useful software included, but more importantly, this is a great CD-RW drive from a trusted company. And, it's a great value...you won't be disappointed.

Summary: Works like a charm on my Macintosh!

Summary: Easy to do
Review: Once I realized that I needed an IEEE 1394 interface card and waited another week before I got it, I got the whole thing installed in less than half an hour and burned my first CD about 10 minutes later. So far, this has been pretty easy. I am very pleased with it.

Summary: Works like a charm on my Macintosh!
Review: Received my CRW200FXZ last night and burned my first CD the next morning on my Mac B/W G3. I was really skeptical of the software after reading other reviews, but had no problems. The software was very easy to use.
My computer is a 350 MHz B/W G3 with 640 Megs of RAM and running OS 9.1.

Summary: Hardware's fine; Mac software definitely not so fine
Review: This was a top-of-the-line Firewire CD-RW burner when I bought it. I have no doubts that the hardware is well-made; it does indeed burn CDs in four minutes, and it does indeed have buffer underrun protection, and it does indeed enable me to back up my important documents and create custom CDs. However, it's worth noting that my experience with this item was far from plug-and-play. This was 100% due to the poor quality of the CD-burning software that was bundled with it for Macintosh users.

I bought this burner to use with my Macintosh G4 tower with MacOS 9.2. The software provided for Mac users was Ahead Nero Max 1.5.2. At the time I received the unit (I purchased it without doing any serious research on the software, alas), I checked Ahead's website to see if it had any information about the software. At the time, the software was apparently still in beta. There was very little information and absolutely no support.

The marketing copy may call Nero's software "top-rated," and perhaps the Windows version is acceptable, but I found the Mac interface terribly unintuitive to work with -- many options, many window panes, many notations that make little sense to someone who is unfamiliar with CD-burning basics. Since this was my first CD burner purchase, I hadn't a clue, and this software was totally incapable of extending a helping hand.

No Mac manuals were included in the package, so instead of waiting for Yamaha tech support to point me to the promised-but-unfindable Mac manuals on their website (note: they never did), I decided to wing it. I used Nero's wizard to attempt to burn my very first music CD; two minutes later I had burned my very first coaster. To this day I still have no idea if this failure was due to a software bug or "user error" -- the software didn't give me any way of knowing, and that's very bad design practice.

Rather than spend any more time using Nero Max's frustrating, possibly-buggy, definitely-beta interface, I solved my problems by going out and buying a Toast Titanium for Mac. Toast is fairly well-designed save a few UI quirks (nothing destructive) and has been through enough development cycles that you can expect some degree of reliability. But having already dropped {the money] on the burner, I am extremely annoyed that I had to do this.

This burner also comes with Photoshop 5.0 LE for the Mac. While I was pleasantly surprised to find this software bundled, I was unpleasantly surprised to find that the box did not include the serial number so that I could install the software. To be fair, Yamaha tech support did respond to my inquiry about *this* problem within a few days.

So, to sum up...

Never doubt that the usability of the bundled software is just as important as the reliability of the hardware it comes with. I'm sure Yamaha went with a different software package to save a few bucks over the cost of licensing Toast (the CRW2100 line included a version of Toast), but this software choice severely impacted my experience with this product, and that's the sole reason it gets only two stars. If you're considering CD burners, and don't already own some CD-burning package you're happy with, buying a decent burning program to use with this burner can set you back [even more money]. If this bugs you, I'd suggest doing some serious research into purchasing a burner that comes bundled with something else.

Summary: A Total loser
Review: What I wanted was a burner to attach to my IBM Thinkpad to make CDs. What I got (purchased on the basis of positive reviews here) was an expensive piece of junk. Tried three different IEEE1364 cards to interface with this; nothing worked (except the computer recognized all three of the cards). Turn on the CD-RW drive and the computer crashes, with all three IEEEs. A complete wipeout: I could only re-start the computer by removing the connection AND the battery. I called Yamaha, finally (I really couldn't believe the problem was there), got a very helpful agent who gave me a Return Authorization number, sent the machine to Yamaha and waited. A quick turn-around(10 days), and I plugged the CD-RW in this morning and, once again, my computer crashed. The CD-RW drive is now sitting in my trash bin and it will be a long time before I buy a Yamaha product again. What a waste.
