Description:

VideoStudio 6.0 is designed to make constructing a video from scenes shot with a DV camera simple and logical. In addition, this latest version allows you to burn the results to a DVD or Video CD.

The main editing screen, which really benefits from its redesign, is divided into four key areas. The main pane is a preview screen, which plays back your edited or partly edited footage. To the right is a library of thumbnails for the clips or scenes you may want to draw on. On the other side is a palette of controls for applying effects and transitions. The bottom section of the screen provides both a timeline, showing how scenes run and overlap, and a storyboard, displaying stills from each clip used. You can switch between the two modes at will.

The features new to version 6.0 are concentrated at either end of the editing process. To get video clips into the program, you can now connect a DV camera directly into an IEEE 1394 socket on your PC and use VideoStudio 6.0 to capture them, converting them directly to DVD-compatible MPEG files. It will even autodetect scene breaks, saving each scene as a separate file.

When you've finished editing, the program can prepare and render your video and burn it onto DVD or its smaller sibling, Video CD (VCD). You can even add the buttons and special scenes most professional DVD movies contain, too. Overall, Video Studio 6.0 is a tremendous tool for home video, transforming the whole process at a modest price. --Simon Williams
