Review: ... I've been looking for an mp3/cd player forever, and there is NO perfect one. The only one that probably comes close is the iRiver Slim-X, but for a price! The Sony D-CJ500 is the next best thing.

This player is good! Simply. It does not include all the extra features some players do, but do you really need it, of course not! Some may say the bass boost distorts, probably because you are using headphones. Headphones have mini drivers that cannot pump enough bass to make the house shatter. Also, people complain about no back-lit LCD display - if it is your cd why would it matter what the song title is. You should already know the songs and titles!... There isn't a "next 10" or "previous 10" button like some mp3/cd players such as the Rio. Do you need it? No! All you have to do is put 15 songs in 9 different folders and you switch through folders, its that simple! The ...P>This player IS a good player, it takes a bit to heat up... For the [$] USD you pay for, you get your money's worth. ... 4 stars because nothing is perfect.

Enjoy

Summary: reading the manual helps
Review: before buying, i read the reviews.

some people had issues, i had some issues too, but i saw from the manual that the solutions were right there, if not as
in-my-face as might've helped.

Probs
1.it was slow to read table of contents
2.it was playing about 50% of the disc before it started skipping/popping.
3.it has an annoying beep when buttons are pressed

Solutions
1.finalizing the disc is recommended specifically for this reason

2.the manual could've been a bit less subtle about it but it *was* there: 'playback capabilities may vary depending on the quality of the disc and the condition of the recording device.'

i tried a different disc(bluish dye as opposed to the original greenish dye) it improved to 85% i tried a newer burner and it improved to 100% (even with the greenish dyed cdr's)

3. hold down the stop button while inserting batteries or power supply

sound is great, battery life, skip protection, it's not any flimsier that any other portable player i've seen(it's not really flimsy to begin with). isppose i would put a back lit display on the wishlist but it's not all that important...adds a little mystery :)

Summary: no more need for JUST cd's!
Review: Excellent for a multi formated day! You can flip between reading cd's and mp3's with ease. It's perfect for those of us who want the functionality of a cd player and the sheer memory capacity of an mp3 player, but don't know where to begin. Cool Functions: The memory function (when you turn it off and then turn it back on, it'll start right back up where you left off) is VERY cool. The folder buttons (on the Mp3 function, which it reads on its own, by the way) switches you to the next batch of folders of songs smoothly. The skip protection is teriffic (you can go to the gym with it and it withstands college student abuse rather well). The three "sound settings" are really Bass settings and the sound is VERY clear. Overall, instructions are fool-proof, easy to follow and I love it. One draw back I've noticed is that there isn't a pause button. A great purchase for the price, especially if you're going to buy just a regular cd player, why not invest just a little bit more and get something THIS much cooler?

Summary: Sorry, not a review. A question
Review: From what i have heard, this player is great. But, i just have one question: How does the MP3 work? I just don't understand it. Somebody please tell me.

Summary: Solid Option
Review: I am actually writing a review for the D-CJ506CK, which is exactly the same model but with the following differences:
*It is black with red backlighted display
*Comes with a car kit plus an AC adapter
Time of Ownership: 2 months

The unit looks very sturdy and well built. It has a two line lcd that displays the track name and artist in a scrolling fashion on the top line and the track number and elapsed song time at the bottom (supports ID3 tagging) It also has a battery status and play mode indicator. It plays quite loud and has an option that prevents it from playing so loud as to cause injury to your ears. It does play MP3 cds for 24 hours on two AA alkaline batteries and Sony reports 32 with regular cd's (I have checked the former but not the latter claim). In any case just buy NiHi batteries they will pay for themselves many times.
The quality of music is very good and I truly love the bass boost (2 levels). The player never skips. It comes with 2 levels of skip protection, I have never used the second one yet.
Pros:
Backlighted display when using DC or AC current (the lcd will light up for few seconds if a button is pressed when using batteries)
Very long battery life
Plays VBR mp3's
No problems reading cd-rw's burned in different computers
You can search within a song.
Easy navigation and hold button
Decent earphones
Con's (what keeps me from rating it 5 stars):
No remote control
No playlist playback
Does not recharg the batteries (not a big deal)
Bottom line: for the price and quality of the unit is is a very smart buy

Summary: Great all around CD Player
Review: I bought this CD player more than eight months ago and it has been worth every penny I paid for it. I have not run into the problems some of the other reviewers have. One reviewer said his constantly skips, I can tell you that this is definitely not the case. I take mine to the gym with me and it falls out of my pocket and smacks the ground at least five times a day, it doesn't ever miss a beat and after three months of this is still going strong, so I can attest to it's durability as well. I have even attempted to make it skip by vigorously shaking it and dropping it, it still has never skipped. Every CDR I have put in there has worked perfectly so far, but I must admit I haven't tried any CDRWs yet. Some other pros of this item: Sleek slim design fits into the pocket of my workout clothes, clear wonderful sound, and easy to use interface. The only big pet peeve I have had is the headphones that come with the model, they are uncomfortable and do not produce good sound. Overall this has by far been the best CD player I have ever run across and is an excellent buy.

Summary: IMPRESSED!
Review: I bought this CD/MP3 Player thinking it would be like my previous panasonic, rio volt and mp3 rio players. NOT.. it has awesome sound, and NEVER skips! I cant believe some of the people who said it did, take it back, you got a rare defective device. Also, if you have ever had a mp3 player they eat batteries, 24 hour battery life on this one! The cd stops spinning once the mp3 is temporarily stored, saving the battery from being eaten up in the cd spinning process. The thing I like is the tagging and folder options makes for easy finding of the mp3's. I like to put them into files based on my mood so I am not constantly having to switch files. The only downside is the screen doesnt light up. But for this quality Who cares.

Summary: unacceptable
Review: I bought this play earlier today (at a store, not Amazon) and I am returning it tomorrow, because its performance is totally unacceptable. The player has problems reading store-bought CDs that even my old {ten dollar} player never had a problem with. The CDs spin for a while, and then the player shuts itself off. Other times, the player hangs indefinitely in the middle of a track. Again, this is with normal, store-bought, audio CDs, not with custom CD-Rs of questionable quality.

As for the MP3 features, I understand that it should take a little longer for MP3 CDs to start playing because the player must scan the CD's entire file system, but instead of taking a few extra seconds, it takes several minutes. If you pause in the middle of a song long enough for the player to power down, it has to reload the file system again when you resume playing. So, if you wait too long before unpausing, you have to wait 2-3 minutes before the player begins playing again.

This product is totally unacceptable, especially for Sony, and especially considering that it is not one of the cheaper MP3/CD players. I sincerely hope that my unit is defective, because I am shocked at the poor, poor quality of this product.

What makes it the biggest shame is that when the player works, compared to other CD players and solid-state MP3 players that I have encountered, the sound quality is phenomenal.
