Summary: Very good product for the price
Review: After reading the many other reviews -- the ones who were complaining about the beeping noise, apparently didn't read the instructions. The sound can be disabled perminently by pressing the stop button when you put in the batteries or ac/dc adapter.

Second, the quiet noise problem can be easily adjusted by properly setting the volume from the walkman. If you are getting some type of static, its because your tape deck is crappy and getting interference.

Otherwise, the sound quality is what i expected from a $50 walkman (for those of you who are getting bad sound quality - it may be a headphone problem, go buy better ones) - the earphones that come with the set aren't great, but I wasn't expecting to use them anyways. I have a better pair of headphones.

Summary: It DOES play fine in your car
Review: Apparently folks are making the same mistake with the car connecting pack, but luckily the solution is very simple. If the car connecting pack is making a rattling noise and producing very low sound it is because you have an Auto Reverse cassette deck, and if you reverse the playback direction it will play correctly. The car connecting pack has to be inserted with the printed side up, and it will only "play" in one direction. It took me a few minutes to figure this out, but once I did I was pleasantly surprised at the volume and quality of sound I was getting. It plays both commercial CDs and personally-recorded CDRs without a problem, and I have yet to encounter a problem of tracks at the end not playing. Basically it does exacly what I want.

However, the CD player is not without faults. The operation beep sound is very loud and annoying, but can be disabled by holding down the Stop button when you put in batteries or connect the power adaptor. Not a big deal. The construction of the CD player seems very cheap and plastic, and I doubt it will last very long being toted around, but I suspect that is the case with a lot of portable CD players. With the two cables connected from the CD player to my car dash it looks very unsightly, and I don't want to use the remote commander and add one more thing. Again, probably the case with a lot of these portable CD & car connecting setups. And of course the headphones that come with the CD player sound terrible, but that's almost to be expected at this price range. I have no problem paying another $20 or so to use better headphones.

Summary: Solid product
Review: I cringed when I read many of the reviews on this site, because I really wanted to a CD player with car kit as a gift for my father, but even Sony's product was poorly reviewed. Well, I'm glad I took my chances. Many of the comments about volume, etc. may be misguided. When my father first used this, he had the same problem. However, the troubleshooting guide that came with the product fixed the problem -- if you reverse the direction of the tape inserted into the tape deck, volume is normal. So take note of that fact, and give this product a chance. It's great.

Summary: My life just got musically inclined !!
Review: I followed the advice of the previous reviewer and bought this player with the car kit. It is just fabulous!! I hooked it up in the car in about 5 minutes and wham, bang, thank you maam !!! The sound is great. It is so easy to use and I just love the little remote which can fast forward to a song or backup to a song or turn the unit off. The sound is also great by itself with batteries and headphones. I agree with the previous reviewer that the headphones are not anything special. I have a pair of Koss "street-style behind the neck" headphones which work much better because they are so comfortable. I can't imagine a better deal. Someone at Sony knows what they are doing....how refreshing......

Summary: Good Product
Review: I just received this player and tested it at my car. There is no problem with the volume as some other reviewers mentioned! Of course, you should turn the volume on the player a little high (more than 1) to get a good sound. I also tried to reverse play the tape (converter) to see what happens. In that case, no sound was heared.

Regarding the beep sound, based on the instruction manual, if you hold "stop" button and then plug it in the power or put the batteries, the beep sound would be eliminated. However, note that you should put batteries in the player (before putting, press "stop" to cut the beep sound) to save your setting (like CD volume, the track it is playing, beep sound and ...) on the player. So if you turn off your car, it doesn't reset and you won't have to adjust the setting again. I wish sometime the reviewers make their statement with knowledge to not mislead people.

Summary: Several years later and still haven't improved!
Review: I recently bought this because my cd changer died. I had my first cd walkman about 10 years ago and did not like the low volume and background noise. I thought they would have improved these after so many years (so the sales lady told me). I was wrong! You have to turn the vehicle volume so low that you just know you will blow those speakers. Beware-if you change to the next song, you will hear this loud beep. The buttons are small. I could not listen to my cd's and will be returning as soon as possible.

Summary: Very good product for the price
Review: I was confused by the reviews of people who didn't like it. I first purchased a 'Memorex' one for the price, but I had the worst time with it...needless to say I had to exchange it 2 times, after which I finally returned it.
I went with the Sony as it was priced at about $100 (max for my budget) and came with a car kit. I love the remote for it, so you don't have to fidget with the small buttons while driving. I too had a problem with the beeping sound that it made, but fixed it no problem.
Above all this is a great product and I recommend it 100%.
