Summary: Cheap Price - Great Sound
Review: I looked into these Sony speakers because Consumer Reports raved about their sound and cheap price. CR was absolutely right on both counts. These solid speakers have cleaner, crisper sound than the $300-$400 speakers I was comparing them to. Some folks complain about the lack of bass, but I found that the bass was fine, considering that they're bookshelf speakers after all.
One caveat -- they're pretty big for a bookshelf, and in fact look more like low floor-standing speakers (put them on stands anyway to get them a little higher).

Summary: so so value
Review: Bought these speakers to replace some 45 year old cabinet speakers.
hooked up one to compare with my old speakers, dissapointment!!!!!
With same volume setting performance was very bad.
loudness was about 50%, changing bass control to max still provided sub standard bass response. am going to keep looking.
Expected much more from sony name

Summary: Very very decent
Review: I am no professional, or trained audiophile, but after reading reviews on these I purchsed them as I was replacing a shelf stereo with component system. The speakers made even the crappy little stereo sound good.

They sounded terrible in Best Buy, but it's because of the crappy speaker wire they use. I have it hooked up with 16 gauge copper with golden tip connectors, and they sound amazing.

They do not have the base of some other speakers out there, but I don't like to wake up my neighbors anyways. They sound CLEAR. no exaggerated bass, and no underpowerred bass. they sound just right.

So if you don't feel like spending $300 on Klipsch etc, buy a pair of these. They are awesone (an of course they are pretty much low floor speakers, I cannot imagine a shelf these would fit on)

2 days later: I finally hooked them up to SONY receiver (I bought a used STR-DE135) and they sound AWESOME. The right comination of all ranges, beautiful sound. Even though my whole setup is in one corner and I am in the other (along the same wall) of my HUGE living/dining/working room (long and narrow) with beautiful sound. Once more, confirmed, if you don't feel like spending $300 on Klipch and the-like, just pick a pair up, and try them at home. I assure you that even if you can return then you won't.

BTW look out for discounts on them. They sel for average of $99, but often go on sale here and there for $79 and lower (best Buy, B&H Photo) etc...

Summary: The most accurate speakers you can get for under 150$.
Review: I used to have a pair of SSMB200Hs by Sony and I loved them. However the wires broke after about 4 years so I decided to buy these.I have not been disappointed. These are a bit of an improvement in some ways as well. You get clearer treble and deeper bass without having to crank it to 10 like I did for the 200s.Although Ive heard fanicer sleeker speakers I must say that these are my favorites. These are great for hard rock, grunge and metal. Its because nothing beats the way these sound when played loud.Listen to Slayer's Reign In Blood,Metallica's Master Of Puppets or Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love at a relatively loud level and youll never want to leave these. These are about as accurate as you can get for under 150$.So if its loud and clear you want pick up a pair. You wont be disappointed.

Summary: Decent Speakers
Review: These speakers sound pretty good when hooked up in a system but lack some bass. I would think they would have a little more kick with the 8" woofers. The highs are awesome. They didn't sound as good at best buy as they did once i got them home. You might want to add a sub to get the full range.
