Summary: Be Careful!
Review: Be sure and listen to this speaker before you buy it. "Consumer Reports" rates it last of 13 tested center channel speakers with an accuracy of "65" out of "100". Their comment is "Fair. There are better choices". (11/02 issue)

I do not own this speaker but bought its predecessor, the VS100, based on the Bose reputation. Regretfully, I had to replace it with another brand even though the rest of my theatre system is all Bose. (I even have Bose 161s throughout my home.) Their other speakers are excellent. Bose just does not seem to achieve the realism in their center channel speakers that they are so famous for in their other equipment.

Summary: Nothing wrong with this Center Channel Speaker
Review: I almost didn't order this based on the poor reviews and Consumers Reports findings. I needed a thin center speaker to go with the acoustimass cubes - this was the logical choice. After researching it at length there were mixed reviews with many negative comments. I called Cruthfield and the Bose Outlet to get their opinions. They were surprised to hear that there were negative comments. The Bose outlet advised theirs sounded great and noted it must be hooked directly to the receiver - not the module like the cubes. I have had the speaker for a couple weeks and it sounds great. I have two other surround systems, one high end and a lower end system and the Bose performs admirably for such a compact system. The articulation of words coming from the center speaker sounds like a real person. I don't understand the bad reviews - unless it's not being connected properly. Worked for me - and as most retailers note you can always send it back.

Summary: What a complete piece of junk. Seriously. Don't buy it.
Review: I bought this center channel because I needed a really thin channel to fit in a tight spot by my television. I also bought into the Bose marketing machine garbage during an earlier period of my life, which I am ashamed to admit to now.

Don't buy this thing. It really is garbage. This has got to be the worst example of spending $200 in my life. Dialogue on movies is unintelligible and you cannot hear a thing people are saying. I have to put English language dialogue on the screen in order to follow the movie when I can't completely crank the stereo. Honestly!

My British mother-in-law was visiting us here in the California and complained on numerous occasions about her inability to understand any dialogue in the movies we watched. What an embarrassment...having my surround sound system dyssed by my kid's middle-aged British grandmother.

I don't know what other center-channel you should buy, but do yourself a favor and stay far away from this one. It really is little more than an expensive paperweight. I'm going to get rid of mine soon so that I can start actually start listening to the actors in movies, instead of having to lip read.

Summary: weak sound
Review: I bought this primarily based on the BOSE reputation as well as the fact that it would sit nicely on top of the TV and fit in my stand.

I could not have been more disapointed. I was replacing a KLH 3 way center channel, and the sound was not even close to that.
The sound was weak, with little presence. After bringing up the center channel 12db and dropping the left and right channels -10db I could finally hear the dialogue from the center channel. I was not expecting bells and whistles, but I was expecting that I could actually hear the dialogue CLEARLY, and without a 22db difference in loudness between center and left/right.

Summary: not worth the price
Review: I did have listened to it several times at different locations (no, I haven't bought one - why would I waste my money on some inferior product?) and yea, some people are right - the quality of sound coming from it is no better than the quality of sound coming out of speakers of my 20" TV. That's not a surprise, once you'll disassemble it and see with your own eyes that this is a most basic one-way speaker design (just a few regular "mid-range" speakers placed horizontally with no dedicated tweeter), and the speaker cones are made out of untreated paper - cheapest material that can be used in speakers. Just like the built-in speakers in my generic 20" TV. Maybe if the price for this speaker would be 10 times less, it would be worth buying it, but for that price there are better choises available. If you think that it sounds "amazing" or even "good" - well, then, I'm very sorry for you, you're either musically deaf person ...or you have never heard anything better (I mean speakers made by different brands such as JBL, Acoustic Research, Klipsch, B&W, Infinity and so on) in your life. ...

Summary: Silence Bose haters!
Review: I have heard this speaker and it is great! It make voices sound like they were in front of you for movies, and for music voices sound like you were in a concert with the artist in front of you! I would get one of these but I already have a Bose Hometheater so no need for this :) Dont ever listen to reviews.. Bose is perfect at making ACCURATE and LIFELIKE clear spacious and bassy sound.

For Bose Haters and Criticizers..
If you say Bose distorts you have never heard their systems! Bose systems NEVER distort! The reviewers saying that are crazy! They havent even gone to a Bose Store! Then they say the materials Bose uses are crap and they use paper.. I own Klipsch speakers and the Bose materials are almost like Plastic! The Klipsch are plain paper I could break with a pencil!! Then they say Bose speakers rely on reflecting sound.. they dont! the reflected sound just adds spaciousness and by the way, only some Bose speakers use the reflecting technology, so Bose haters can shut up and go to h-ll! They claim to be experts and have a lot of knowledge about Bose, but trust me, Ive compared A LOT to Bose, and Klipsch, Polk, Infinity and anything you name will always be a level below Bose.

Summary: Don't get it!
Review: I have to agree with the review that mentioned the 22 db difference. I got this center channel to match my 601, which sounds pretty good, to my 201, which sound okay but, for what I paid was in itself a rip off. I tell you I can barely hear the dialogue. I had the db cranked all the way up, and my left and right speakers as well as my sub db's turned way down. It just doesn't make sense. Bose took me. The 601 were worth the money, but their bacon is in the center channel. I could have done better with a fifty dollar book shelf. Anyone writing anything positive about this speaker either owns stock in this company, works for the company, or owns the company. Don't be the next victim. Sincerely said.

Summary: Average Sound
Review: I just purchased the VCS-10 to replace my outdated (or so I thought) Polk Center. Boy was I in for a surprise! The VCS-10 sounded worse than my 7yr old Polk. Thus, the VCS-10 got returned. I just purchased the Acoustic Research AR4C for less than the Bose, and it sounds great!

Summary: Great Speaker for the Intermediate Enthusiast
Review: I just received this speaker as a gift. I am extremely pleased with this product. Most who complain about this products clarity are looking for flashy sounds such as those associated with accentuated bass and/or treble frequencies. While those sounds may be initially attractive to the novice, they are not real and not enduring like the Bose Center Speaker. The reviewer above sounds like this type of person. None compares to this for the price. In addition, you can find it on sale too from time to time.
