Description:

MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 further extends the reach of Windows 2000 and Terminal Server Edition servers, with a satisfying user experience, improved performance, and stronger security through encryption and authentication. It not only adds important usability, performance, and security capabilities to MetaFrame 1.8, but also marks the debut of a new, modular approach to Citrix product delivery. In response to the needs of customers and partners, Citrix has improved the flexibility of product releases by coordinating frequent feature updates (Feature Releases) and less-frequent architectural updates (Platform Releases). This approach will allow users and partners to gain added value from Citrix products on a regular basis.

Feature Release 1 adds capabilities in the areas of performance, usability, and security.

Performance:

  • SpeedScreen 3 enhances user experience with consistent performance regardless of network connection by reducing latency and improving the feel of the application. SpeedScreen 3 technology enables users on restricted bandwidth connections to receive an instant response to typed data while the actual transmission to/from the server is completed.
  • With TCP-based ICA browsing, ICA clients can discover published applications without relying on UDP broadcasts. Using the standard TCP protocol makes it easier for data to traverse firewalls, enabling users--especially ASP customers--to access protected servers.
  • Web-based ICA Client Install allows administrators to install and update ICA clients from a central Web server. If a user does not have anICA Client, the Web-based ICA Client feature identifies the platform a user is on, and offers the opportunity to automatically download the appropriate client. Instead of having to touch every desktop throughout the organization, administrators save time and money by remotely installing ICA clients, thus extending MetaFrame's single-point management capabilities.
Usability:
  • MetaFrame 1.8 Feature Release 1 provides support for high-color(65,000) and true-color (16 million) sessions. Users enjoy enhanced,PC-like color quality, even on thin-client devices. This feature is fully configurable by the administrator.
  • With multimonitor support, applications can span multiple monitors within a single session.
  • When a user must end a session in the middle of a project, it can take time to determine the previous position. The Application Save Position eliminates the hunt for the previous end point by enabling the ICA client to open the application at the position and size where the session terminated. During the next session, the client will open the application with the previously stored size and position values.
Security:
  • 128-bit encryption makes the security capabilities of SecureICA an intrinsic part of MetaFrame. SecureICA protects data being sent over the network with a very high level of encryption. The use of 128-bit encryption creates a formidable barrier against unauthorized users attempting to interpret MetaFrame transmissions. SecureICA works with existing networks, including the Internet, RAS, and direct asynchronous ICA connections.
  • With Pass-Through Authentication, the need for multiple system and application authentication is eliminated, by passing the user's password to the server, giving the customer a seamless connection between local and remote connections for time saving and greater productivity.
