Summary: Loved it
Review: This movie is great, I love watching John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and the whole of Congress burst into song at any moment. It is really hard to control the urge to sing along!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: One for the ages!
Review: Truly a masterpiece! The finest performance that I have ever seen transfers to the screen. This is a production where you will enjoy it as much the first time as the 1776 time, with the only difference being your uncontrolable desire to sing along.

Summary: You'd never suspect...
Review: ...that there could ever be a MUSICAL made out of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but this is one of the best unknown musicals in America. It gives life and breath to our Founding Fathers and knocks them down a few pegs from demi-Gods to just ordinary men with a momentous task ahead of them. It shows their human sides that history books often ignore or present them as these staunch holier than thou personalities. I especially enjoy the dismal, depressing messages from George Washington. It is pretty well true to the way things probably went in Philadelphia. Well, with exception to the songs. I'm sure there were songs, just not those particular ones. I think the most stirring of them all is "Look Sharp, Mother" but they are all extremely poignant. If you listen close you can hear semi-references to the then waging Vietnam War and other jabs to Congress. I do miss the song "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" and wish they had left it in. This is an excellent example of art imitating life and it being decent and true to watch. I give it 4 stars and probably .99% of another one.

Summary: Fun film loses much without letterboxing!
Review: This less than historically accurate film was based on the smash Broadway hit and comes to the big screen with most of its original cast intact. It's lots of fun and a joy to watch these stage veterans hash it up with witty dialogue and catchy tunes. The video version loses a lot of its impact because it was filmed in 2.35:1 and the "pan & scan" at times gets down right annoying. But other than that it is a real treat for practically the whole family! (Younger viewers may miss some of the adult oriented material which is probably just as well.) Have fun with this one!

Summary: History brought to life
Review: This brought history to life and as a historian and as a singer, this is the best musical I've run into. True, it's not too accurate but the general idea is protrayed wonderfuly. This movie will have you laughing, I promise!

Summary: A Film Worth Seeing
Review: While hardly the smoothest of all Broadway to Hollywood transfers, this movie is certainly an enjoyable and highly professional piece of work. Most of the original Broadway cast recreate their roles, including the fabulous William Daniels as John Adams, and the hysterical Howard DaSilva as Benjamin Franklin. The main problem with this one is that it works a lot better on stage, and tends to suffer in comparrison. Still, if you like history, or tire of musicals (or any other kind of film) that seem to lack a point, this one's for you.

Summary: One of the best movies of all time!
Review: I can't believe that's Mr. Fini from Boy Meets World! I only recently saw this movie on cable and had to buy it! It is unbelievable! As good if not better than any musical or other type of movie out there! William Daniels is my new hero! I'll actually be on his side when I watch Boy Meets World now. And Ben Franklin and Richard Lee are hilarious! Thomas Jefferson is so cool too! They were all great! I love the song "But John"!! It was hilarious!

Summary: Restored 1776 deserves 5 stars!
Review: One of the best "Broadway to Hollywood" transfers, terribly underated during its original release. It seems impossible, but everything works in this enjoyable musical concerning the events surrounding the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independance.Great ensemble performances. Even the somewhat silly songs ring true. However, the version to see is director Peter Hunt's original preview cut which runs almost 40 minutes longer than the currently available pan/scan mono tape. It restores the great COOL COOL CONSERVATIVE MEN sequence along with several other scenes. COME ON COLUMBIA HOME VIDEO, GIVE US THE "TRUE" 1776!!! That is the version which rates 10 stars in my opinion!!!

Summary: U.S. History Teachers This is a Must for your collection
Review: Allow your students to get out of the hum drum of daily lectures. This wonderful musical permits students to get inside of history for about 3 class periods. The accuracy may be imperfect, but the jist of the story is there. You have the countdown, you have the intensity, you have the conflict (over slavery) you have the key players, and most of all you have the entertainment. You will be amazed at how much your students allow themselves to "get into" the film.
