Rating: Summary: Great Movie, So-So DVD Review: While I give this *movie* 5 stars, I was disappointed in this DVD presentation and would give it 3 stars. The film-to-DVD transfer is of marginal quality, and the source was in terrible shape (dirty and badly scratched). Either they didn't use the original film master, or it has deteriorated badly over the past several years.I personally found the director's commentary disappointing as well. IMHO, L.Q. spends too much time discussing high level approaches to general film making, and not enough time detailing the specifics of the AB&HD filming. If you, like I, hang on directors' commentaty for copious quantites of behind-the-scenes trivia, little known facts, and explanations, you may be greatly disappointed. If, on the other hand, you don't care for play by play discussions of the film, you might not mind. I was also disappointed that the DVD contained no supplemental information about the novella on which the movie is based. In all, a brilliant story by Elison, brilliant screenplay and directing by L.Q. Jones, so-so DVD presentation.
Rating: Summary: Man's Best Friend and then some! Review: Somewhere I read that Harlan Ellison wanted his name removed from the credits. Go figure. I loved this movie. The dialog between Vic (Don Johnson) and Buck (the dog) was classic, especially the history lessons on presidents (Kennedy-Kennedy-Kennedy; thank God that never panned out!). Suzanne Benton does a great striptease in reverse. And is it just me, or does 'Michael', the killer android from 'downunder' look like Alan 'The Skipper' Hale Junior? Funny, sexy, and ultraviolent, this movie is a cult classic, to use the purest definition of the term. The moral, such as it is: beets are better for you anyway. Also, bring your own damned popcorn!
Rating: Summary: One of the more interesting SF movies around Review: A cult favorite for years, this faithful version of Harlan Ellison's classic novella enjoyed some mainstream popularity in the mid-'80s when its star, Don Johnson, hit the big time with "Miami Vice." In recent years the movie has settled back into cult status, which is for the best. Johnson (in an excellent performance) is Vic, a simple-minded survivalist who wanders what's left of post-apocalypse America with his dog Blood (played by Tiger of "The Brady Bunch," with voice by singer Tim McIntire), with whom he has a telepathic bond. Vic's main ambition in life is to, well, find female companionship; he demands that Blood sniff out girls for him. He meets a seemingly innocent young woman who leads him down to a strange subterranean civilization where all the men are sterile. Eventually, Vic is presented with a hard choice. The decision he makes has remained controversial; the one-liner that ends the film is even more so. (Ellison didn't write the line and has expressed discomfort with it. I think it's one of the great final lines in movie history.) If you haven't seen this film, chances are you've seen a dozen better-known SF movies it influenced (like the "Mad Max" series), and Kevin Costner's "The Postman" was a windbag '90s variation on the same theme. If you've only caught this on television, you haven't really seen it.
Rating: Summary: Old Favorite Review: I saw this movie in college, and couldn't figure out why my friend Phlippy wanted me to watch it. By the end, you are sitting there, not believing what you just saw. My friend Matt bought me the Director's Cut DVD- what a great gift. You definitely need to be in the right frame of mind for this one, which usually means a beer or two. I actually found a website where you can watch the entire movie streaming online, and that was a treat until I got the DVD. This is a movie that needs to be in the collection of any B movie fan with a twisted sense of humor about the world. And it's a movie you probably don't want to watch with your girlfriend. It sheds male bonding in an all new light.
Rating: Summary: Interesting... Review: IF you liked Mad Max then this is a movie for you. An almost humorous look at the post-apocalyptic world of Phoenix, Arizona. The story of a "boy"(don Johnson) and his telepathic dog. In this time dogs can search out females so the basic story line is survival and finding females. Still fun and a little confusing at times but as I said before if you liked Road Warrior then this is for you.
Rating: Summary: An Great Science fiction Premise with Dark Sense Of Humor. Review: Don Johnson, for most people is not your favorite actor but in this film, he gives one of his performance in this film, his another best is Paradise. This film, its works for the actor. I seen this film in the internet and i was surprise this film is really good film with Apocalyspe Premise and the Dark Humor is one of the best thing, worth watching in this Cult Classic. I did like the Plot, between friendship-a boy and his much smarter dog(voiced by Tim Mc Intire, he sing the film title), looking for food and for sex. We don`t see that in film these days. Well Directed by Actor-L.Q. Jones, we seen him(The Wild Bunch, The Edge, The Mask Of Zorro). Harlon Ellison did the Screen Play, Based on his Novel. Actor-Jason Robards has a Small Role in this film in the last half-hour. This best about this film is First,Two/Third of the film and Last half-hour is about a bizarre bunch of people are living together, liked Cult Members doing the same thing, every day is bit of a letdown. But the Black humor is funny at the end of the film, but i won`t tell you, what happen. See the film for yourself and you dediced is it a Great Film or Not. Grade:B+. Technovision.
Rating: Summary: Memorable low-budget flick Review: This is an excellent, highly rewatchable movie which presents two starkly different worlds - both dystopias - of a post-apocalyptic America. The harsh desert-like land, where howling monsters lurk in the debris and an intelligent dog and his boy roam seeking out women to rape and food. Then there is the nightmarish underground white middle-class world where barbershop quartets mix in artificially lit parks with huge robot security men in oversized breeks, and residents are sent to the 'farm' to die in a fashion decreed by the elders (him...heart attack...her....machinery accident). And there is much much more... This is a truly unique film - I'd say the closest comparisons might be 1984 or Clockwork Orange. It also has some startling moments and leaves you with so much (perhaps too much) to think about in just one movie. It is definitely not to everyones' tastes - especially the film's treatment of women and the sick humour which will turn some off - but the overall result is a film with too many facets to mention in just a few paragraphs. If you are into cult movies and like to take some time rewatching films, then this is an excellent movie to get.
Rating: Summary: Charming, weird, but worth the visit Review: It's hard to describe this movie. But, it has to be seen (and the last line IS the movie) to be appreciated. Words don't do it justice; just see it. You will either love it or hate it. And you'll never forget it.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT MID-NIGHT MOVIE FARE Review: ALTHOUGH DECIDEDLY LOW BUDGET, THE MOVIE IS A CLASSIC. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DOG AND HIS BOY IS HUMOROUS AND ENGAGING. I'VE YET TO MEET A WOMAN WHO LIKES THE END OF THIS MOVIE.
Rating: Summary: A clear view of the female species Review: This movie makes one point and makes it well. Time and time again women try to change men and seperate them from what they love. Fortunately, Don got his hormones back under control a went for true love. Wise man once said: "If your looking for sex, head for the bar, if it is true love you desire, get a dog".
