 Description:

"I'm obsessed with myself," says Macy Gray more than once (and only half-jokingly) in the course of this 75-minute documentary, and A Day in the Life of Macy Gray leaves little doubt of that. Yet considering that the singer is something of an oddball, one would have wished for something more unusual than watching her wandering around the streets of Los Angeles (plus a quick side trip to Vegas) with a couple of pals, talkin' loud but sayin' precious little. There's not much music to speak of, but there's plenty of free publicity for Tower Records (one amusing moment comes when she browses through the CD racks, claiming that everyone from David Bowie to Justin Timberlake stole her hairstyle) as well as various other shops, restaurants, Hollywood tourist attractions, and the like; there are also interview segments with Gray, along with impromptu encounters with street people and other local denizens (including Lance Bass of 'N Sync), but nothing even slightly revelatory until Gray provides us with a tour of her San Fernando Valley crib. It's all mildly diverting, but by and large, you'll have to be about as fixated on Macy Gray as she is on herself to enjoy this tame,Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous-style bit of fluff. --Sam Graham
