Rating: Summary: Beautiful Thing opens our hearts Review: When I saw this movie, I didn't quite understand how I was supposed to feel. It was the most realistic film about gay love I'd ever seen. It made me feel more sure of myself, and who I was. My greatest gratitude to Hettie MacDonald for showing the world that gay love isn't dirty, or anything to be ashamed of! Thank You.
Rating: Summary: Full of Grace Review: When I was a very young man, maybe to some still a boy, the Lord granted me Exceptual Grace. He led me to fall in love with a person of my same sex. The story of this movie mirrors in many aspects my own experience, except that the boy I slept over with was the psychologically and physically abused one. For that love I am humbly grateful. I will take a different slant in my interpretation of this film, because I believe that the joy that it engenders in the heart should be accounted for. I know of only two direct descriptions of God in the Bible. One is that God is Spirit and the second is that God is Love. I believe that in my early love and in the story of Ste and Jamie God was Present. Certainly Love was there and certainly the Spirit Arose to defeat the crushing blindness of the world not to see us as we truly are, just victims of our own hearts, maybe a mystery, maybe not. For me, as a Christian, the biggest mystery is why God loves us at all. We all seem to insist that His Nature is not ultimately Love and that there is so many of us beyond His Compassion and Care. We are dirty, shameful and sinful. Just lepers. Watch this movie and be prepared to be released. And thank God for the Grace that you receive!
Rating: Summary: Glorified Sit-Com Review: While I enjoyed this movie, a recurring thought was, "If this story were about a heterosexual couple, it would be considered sweet but banal, and buried." I agree that it should get credit for being so unforced and open-minded about a gay teen romance, but most people I know are equally open-minded. Why lavish praise on an average script merely because of its political position? The cast was mostly outstanding, and there were many charming moments. But eventually I felt exactly as though I were watching TV. The rhythms, the broadly drawn characters (especially the boyfriend of the mother and the violent father), and the incessant one-liners seemed taken straight from a sit-com.Despite the many genuine touches, it was a little mawkish, predictable, and arbitrarily plotted. Very much what would be called in the States an "After-School Special" (a series of TV-movies dealing with common adolescent crises). I admit, if it hadn't been for all the silly raves below I would've given it three stars....
Rating: Summary: Why one should always read reviews of products... Review: While I was extremely delighted to see that there was a release of this film on DVD format, I let that fact get the better of me before researching the entire product. The film itself is quite possibly one of the most brilliant "gay" films ever. The characters and story line are honest and crisp. HOWEVER, I was completely disappointed when I recieved the film and there were CHINESE SUBTITLES????? Funny that fact was omitted from the "product details" although I would consider that an important piece of information.
Rating: Summary: It really is a beautiful thing! Review: Wonderful drama of first love set in British working class neighborhood! Powerful performances and very believeable characters. Low budget yet well edited.
Rating: Summary: 'Nothing could be finer, than to be ......." Review: WONDERFUL MOVIE! Such a Joy to see something like this - at least on film. in real life? Ha! The poor kids would probably be stoned [literally]. Funny, I advised a friend to see this movie, her adopted son for some or other reason was 'seemingly' going through a similar situation. Well, that ruined the friendship! It's a good movie for 'troubled' [?] teens to discover, and it is totally positive, forget the whole deal about intimacy, add the fact, and important fact, that it's two people communicating, understanding, and loving each other - just that! There are also very funny moments in this landmark film [the supporting cast!] And more fun? "Torch Song Trilogy", and that little Dutch gem -"For A Lost Soldier".
Rating: Summary: Great Movie Review: Wonderful movie. One of my all time favorites. The use of Mama Cass music in the film seems to fit in very well. Great coming out story. A must see for anyone who likes first love stories, gay or straight! A GREAT MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: A must see for all young gay men! Review: Wow! That is all I have to say. If you are gay (or even not, but open minded), and in need of some hope, then see this film. I'm dissapointed that Amazon will not make this available to people under age 18. I'm sure that it is a blanket policy for "R" movies, but if this were about a guy and a girl I am sure that the MPAA would have given it a "PG13" or "PG". How sad. Still, if you are over 18, buy it, if under, get someone to buy it for you!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Things is more... its Awesome!!! Review: WOW! What an awesome movie! I loved this one. This is a coming of age and love story all in one. It is great to see movies made regarding Gay characters that is not primarily about the sex but the person. I only wish it had been released in the US. Gotta love the British! They always get it right!! This movie is set in England and follows the life of one particular boy, Jamie, and his neighbor in a housing development, Ste (short for Steven). Ste is sort of the more popular boy, while Jamie is shy. Jamie has come to realize that he is gay, and when Ste (who has a troubled home life) gets kicked out for the night and spends it with Jaime, he doesn't exactly keep this fact a secret from Ste. It's an extremely heart-warming movie, which above all is cute. Very, very cute. It's got a little bit of the gay plight, a little bit of the coming out plight, and a nice message for gay's that think love between two teens of the same sex is too hard to handle, or outright impossible. I highly recommend this movie for everyone, as it does not show sex scenes or deal with issues that are too mature (since every teen probably already knows about drugs and love).
