Summary: Great but one minus point
Review: A quick synopsys. If you have not seen the movie perhaps you do not want to read this since I reveal a very imporant part of the story.
Henry returns from NY to Big Eden to take care of his ill grandfather. There he met old friends and Dean a classmate in high school that he was secretly in love with. Also another guy Pike he is secretly in love with Henry. One night Henry and Dean kiss each other Dean says that he can't do it.Henry was very understandable and accept his friend wish not to continue. After gradfather pass away Dean talks with Henry and says that he wants to do it and have an affair with him but Henry turns him down. Dean with tears in his eyes asks him not to and to give him a chance, Henry still rejects him with the excuse that he was waiting for years for Dean to respond. (Thats the minus point since a mature and understanding person will not turn down the man he was in love for years. Love does not dissapear like smoke).Next day he discovers that Pike was secretly in love with him. Finaly he falls in love with Pike .

Summary: Best movie of my life
Review: Quite frankly, one of the best movie of my life. The acting was superb and perfect. No bad third-rate actors glad to get a job in this movie. Arye Gross and Eric Schweig are the film world's best kept secrets. Just a beautiful dream fantasy. If all the kids on Earth could watch this movie in school, the world would be a better place....

Summary: A Flawed Crowd Pleaser
Review: I can see why this has been a popular film at gay and lesbian film festivals. It's a sweet movie with that stretches credulity and has some awkward editing moments where you wonder if the film editor was smoking something! A gay, Manhattan-based artist is suddenly called home to tend to his grandfather who has suffered a stroke. Big Eden is a gorgeous mountain town filled with implausibly loving characters. Our hero it seems has carried a long crush for his best friend from high school. Divorced and the father of two young boys, he too has recently returned to Big Eden, with his sons. At first, it looks like our hero's dreams are about to come true. It seems as if his life-long crush is about to come out. Meanwhile, everyone in town seems to know that our hero is gay, knows about his crush on his straight friend, and all seem to be determined to find him a mate. That mate might be a painfully shy, handsome Indian, who was also a high school chum, and it seems, has carried a torch for our hero. He secretly cooks for our hero and his grandfather. Eventually his secret is discovered.

This movie has a touch of ROXANNE'S sweetness, without the comedy. But everyone is a tad too loving, and too pro-gay--it simply doesn't ring true. There are some howlingly bad edits in this film. It's a gorgeous film to look at, and everyone plays their part well (Louise Fletcher, perhaps the best known actor here, is wonderful as our hero's long-time family friend). You'll find yourself really rooting for the guy to find some happiness that has eluded him. I think the film would have worked better had the script been more realistic (how about a few characters that don't look too kindly at a gay character?).

Still, I had a good time in spite of my better judgement.

Summary: This film takes me beyond
Review: First of all, I'm not gay. I didn't know it was categorized as a "gay movie," and I don't care. This is a very well written, directed, performed, photographed, and edited piece of film. The fact that Henry being gay is as naturally beautiful as the lakes and mountains portrayed in the movie. Aren't we all looking for a place like this? I'm not gay, but I'm a guy in 40s. The life is wanting to be simpler, and this movie is a nice reminder to go beyond what we are caught up with.

Summary: Touching with a pleasant lack of cliche's.
Review: This is a touching and wonderful movie. I was surprised, buying it at random, and have since showed it to many of my friends who all loved it. The stereotypical "geek gets buff hunk" doesn't occur in this movie. It's believable and heartwarming. It's about as far from Queer as Folk as it could get. Thank goodness.

Summary: Excellent and brilliant
Review: Big Eden, it's a fantasy world in where I would like to live. It's amazing how they portrait the life of Henry. If you expect to find a movie that will make you laugh, cry, think and most of all, dream, you have to buy it. You will love it.

Summary: Heart-warming and alive.
Review: I've watched this movie 3 times with friends and each time we have all come away with a feeling of warmth. Though many will agree it is not true-to-life for those of us who have experienced daily non-acceptance, it gives us a feeling of hope. I find that it comes the closest to expessing the way gay men feel and interact of any movie I've seen so far; others may disagree. However, everyone that I know who has seen Big Eden agrees that there is definitely something there that touches the heart. A close friend, who had just broken up and was not able to talk about it, poured out his emotions after watching the movie and was much better for it. In my opinion this is definitely worth purchasing.

Summary: They Tried Hard
Review: The Big Eden was kinda a last choice at the movie rental place. I had either seen all the new releases or didn't care to see the rest. Thus, I was forced to scavenge the 'video library' for something worth watching again, or, to brave watching for the first time. I had seen advertisements for Big Eden before, and I knew Wolfe video promotes it highly (though I think their involvement in the film slightly biases them). AnyWho, I gave it a try. While it was not the best film with gay themes, it was not for a lack of trying.

Henry Hart, the protaganist, is led back home to Big Eden, learning his grandfather, Sam, has taken ill. Upon his return, friendships with townfolk rekindle, including a romance with Dean, a straight former bestfriend who is now divorced and back in town with his two kids. (That's a long, complicated description of the rather complicated, almost forced scenariomaticizing of Dean's character) All the while a 'first nations' man is trying to woo Henry through gourmet cooking. If this is not a frightful cliche or idiotic circumstance, I'm not sure what is.

On the whole, the film was entertaining. It was tedious through certain 'reminiscences'. It tasted something like Sweet Home Alambama, but less humorous. The acting was only B, including the protaganist. It is unfortunate that such films, which are relatively 'good', are deemed highly favorable releases from and for the gay and lesbian community. It would be most fascinating to find a film of high calibre 'coming out' of the aforementioned community. It is a wonder why such talented individuals, passionate about gay art and expression, continue to put forth their talents on heterosexual entertainment.
