Summary: MADE WITH TASTE
Review: I enjoy Gay & Lesbian movies and have seen a variety of them. The newest one being "Better Than Chocolate" a very fun, well made comedy. The acting was excellent. As for "Desert Hearts".... truly a classic! This movie is a tasteful film that even the "Homophobic" might enjoy. Bring it back out in VHS and DVD. Thank you.

Summary: Gay, Straight, who cares?
Review: I had the privilege of seeing this movie for the first time on the cable channel BRAVO in 1987 or 1988. That was when they didn't edit movies or have commercials. Imagine if they edited this movie for the general public? I am not gay or homophobic. I didn't even think about sexual preferences outside of the context of the movie. I just thought it was a very well written and acted movie. And it was the best thing Mrs. Roper has done since. I recorded it because I had a feeling it wouldn't be one of those "Back to the Future" type of movie that you could dial up every other week. I was right. It also had one of the best sound tracks. And not just the music itself. It was the way the music was dovetailed in with particular scenes. I wish it would come back or at least be available to rent. Also a very good time period movie. Given the time and place, the situation would have been risky indeed. One of the best movies you won't be able to see for a while.

Summary: Wonderful movie!
Review: I have loved this movie ever since it came out in the theaters in, I think it was 1986. Watched it so many times I know many of the lines by heart. Just a wonderful movie, great lines, scenery, acting. A real period piece too, and man, if they had made a soundtrack of the movie it would be one of my favorite albums! Lots of great period music including Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Patti Page and many more.

Summary: Well acted, but not as well written
Review: I have to start out by saying that there was more about the movie that I liked than I disliked. It's not incredibly long, only being about an hour and a half long, but sometimes it drags too much during that time so that it seems like more time is passing than really does. That's the biggest weakness in the whole story line, how long it takes for things to happen.

The love scene between the two women in this film, when it finally happens, is strong, and plays out as being very real. It's some of the earlier scenes in the movie, and some of the rather stilted conversations they and other characters have, that bogs the movie down. The shy glances exchanged between the two women early on, and even their first tentative kiss were well done, if only the dialogue had been more sharply written, or some of the needless prattling weeded out, the movie would have come across more true.

I have to compliment the two lead actresses, Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau, for being so effective in the intimate moments their characters experienced. They did a good job of showing the love these two women shared without making it seem like a contrived love scene like in so many other movies. They seemed to enjoy one another, as any couple does when they care about each other and are trying to please their mate.

So, all things considered, I recommend seeing this movie, if you don't want to buy it, then at least try to find it to rent. Except for a few long passages which bog down, the rest of the movie is enjoyable, and while not everything is wrapped up with a big bow at the end like in some movies, it is still satisfying, and remains true to the spirit of the rest of the film.

Summary: Really sexy moments in an otherwise so-so film!!!
Review: I liked this one, but only because I've always felt that nothing is more erotic than one woman sexually seducing another woman! I mean, even your so-called "adult films" can't do these scenes right! But "Desert Hearts" came through very well in this regard! Patricia Charboneau is the very attractive lesbian cassino worker, who sets her sights on Helen Shaver, the uptight recent divorcee. Their eventual encounter in a Las Vegas motel room, with Shaver's character reluctant, but Charboneau determined to have her, was HOT! I really liked these women, and that made the sexual scenes all the more appealing!

Summary: Stole My Heart
Review: I loved this movie! It is my all-time, favorite lesbian love story. More recent films have touted themselves as having eclipsed this story, but frankly, I have not yet seen a lesbian film that is better than this one. Yeah, this film has some hokey parts. I do not like the way that director, Donna Deitch suddenly fades to black as a transitioning technique. I do, however, like the 1950's vocal music in the background. The music mirrors the mood of the film and of the characters. I also liked the authenticity of the film in terms its 1950's setting. I liked the old cars and the old clothes and the old slot machines. Even the leather couch and the cowboy-patterned dishes hasten back to the 1950's. I especially liked the performance of Helen Shaver as Vivian Bell, the uptight eastern professor who comes to Reno for a quickie divorce. I had seen her in movies before but it took this movie for me to recognize the depth of her talent. Audra Lindley (AKA, TV's Mrs. Roper from Three's Company) is also excellent. I never really knew where the Audra Lindley character was coming from, even though I have probably seen the film at least ten times. I think that not understanding the character's full motivation is part of the intrigue of her performance; you're never really sure where her true affections lie. The interplay between the two main characters is awesome. It is wonderful to see the attraction grow and to see the younger character's boldness and both character's vulnerability. I give credit to the writer, director and actresses for the authenticity with which they recreated the awkward and often tentative moments of new love. If you never buy or see another lesbian film, buy and see this one.

Summary: Great to see this again! (but hotel scenes missing? )
Review: I remember seeing this movie years ago, when I was having the first inklings that I may not quite swing towards guys...it was breathtaking, and made me feel great about the future. The totally open, "I won't let the world change me" attitude of Cay is refreshing and a great inspiration. Buy this movie now! You won't regret it.

Is it my imagination, or are some of the hotel room scenes from the original movie missing? Thoughts please...

Summary: Fantastic love story
Review: I rented this movie not knowing much about it, because I like the challenge of renting something without information, and therefore, with an open mind.

Upon watching it, I realized that it contains one of the most realistic, sentimental, compelling, honest, and compassionate love stories ever. Regardless of your sexuality, I think everyone can identify with these two characters.

Instead of starting with sex, as so many movies are quick to do, it takes it's time, building a foundation for the two characters, so by the time they share their first kiss, it doesn't feel rushed, or out of place.

Overall, this has quickly become one of my favorite movies. I highly, highly recomend it.

Summary: An excellent movie
Review: I rented this movie not realizing its theme and I really enjoyed it. The setting is perfect and the cast was excellent. As a Writer I was impressed with almost all of the dialogue. There are some great moments here. A few leave you hanging but for the most part it is very well written for a film.
