Summary: The Eagle In the Egg
Review: 1776, is a wonderful musical about the deceleration of independence. How it came about, and the men that were involved.
Also there is an excellent commentary featuring Peter Hunt and Peter Stone. Most commentaries are boring and stuffy, but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Not only do you get to learn more information about important figures such as John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and etc... You also get an inside scoop about the actors, costume designers, and so forth.
You also learn interesting things such as before the movie was realized, John Adams ( William Daniel's) was virtually forgotten. Even with the two new books that were out at the time, it's this movie/musical that really got him the historical background that he so rightly deserves.
John Dickinson ( Adam's rival.) Also has a wonderful performance, who is the antagonist during the film, and history.
More then likely there aren't as many books on Dickinson as compared to Franklin and Jefferson. Is because he was against independence, but not for any wrong reasons really.
At the end he and another member of congress Judge James Wilson. You can honestly watch this movie several times, with our without commentary, because you learn so much excellent information.

Summary: Very entertaining---one of my favorite musicals!
Review: I have loved this movie for quite some time. The music is addicting, the humour fabulous, and it never loses my attention. And while, of course, the story is great, I must again say how wonderful the music is.

Such comments in '1776' as "I have come to the conclusion that one worthless man is a disgrace, two a law firm, and three or more become a congress." are just an example of the wonderful humour.

Definately worth checking out! I highly recommend this movie if you are looking for great entertainment and addictive music!

Summary: Great musical stands the test of time
Review: I first saw 1776 when I was in eighth grade Social Studies class. The professor thought it was a fun way of getting some facts (and some simple entertainment) across to middle school kids. It worked for me. I was glued to the screen the entire time. At that point in my life, I thought it was "neat" that K.I.T.T. played John Adams.

Now, several years later, my wife and I rented the movie, and enjoyed it so much that I just went out and bought it. This DVD is a great presentation of one of the greatest musicals I have ever seen. It does run a bit long, but you hardly notice. This is a highly entertaining film that you can easily show the entire family. Highly recommended. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Summary: New and different
Review: I have enjoyed this movie for years especially on VHS. I ordered the DVD for the wide screen version, but was pleasantly surprised at the different added scenes that are not in the VHS version. The DVD includes a song that is not on the VHS.

Summary: THE WORST MOVIE EVER!!!
Review: This movie is so boring that it made me fall asleep. It was to long and stupid. The worst thing was that they all danced. Even Ben Franklin that could not walk!

Summary: Incredibly Amazing!!!
Review: This movie at first seemed from the cover like another old love tale, but after watching it, it was anything but that. It simply explanined how each of these different characters was involved in the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence, in a fantastic musical way. I learned a lot of facts from this DVD and encourage all to watch it!!!!!

Summary: WONDERFUL, In spite of ommisions
Review: As far as overall viewing quality, this is the best recorded version of "1776" to day. Yes, it's missing some bits from the play, but that's ok for now. It's still a great improvement over the original classic film release.

It is incredible the amount of painstaking research that went into the creation of a musical. Not only is it fun to watch, but the history follows the true story of the struggle for independance closer than any movie I have ever seen! I read someone who whined that it belittles the Declaration of Independance since the only reason it was written was so Jefferson could "have marital relations" with his wife. They weren't watching the same film I was. He didn't want to because he was basiclly a newlywed when he got called to congress and was scheduled to go home to finally have his honeymoon! Adams DID send for Jefferson's wife as thanks to the sacrifice he made because Jefferson knew the importance of what had to be done, and as Adams put it "No one can write better than you, Jefferson". The arguments on slavery were accurate, if not tamed a bit to avoid criticism for "trying to make a statement" where the truth actually echoed reality.

Read the book, see the play, get the soundtrack, love the movie!

Will I be happier if they someday release a "complete edition" like the laserdisc years ago? If they can get this quality, then ABSOLUTELY. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind the supplimental, but this will do for now.

Summary: Wow! What a show!
Review: I really loved this play when I saw it on stage. It really portrays our Founding Fathers in a realistic light. John Adams is an obnoxious man who misses his wife, Jefferson didn't want to write the Declaration of Independance, and Franklin is an old man with the gout. I found the song Molasses to Rum a great song- it shows the other way of thinking about slavery that we don't hear about much. The Lees of Old Virginia is just plain fun.

Although this film is choppy, and they cut out a great song, it is still fun to watch. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Summary: hilarious
Review: This was soooo funny. If,, in a movie, Benjamin Franklin sings"la-la-la" while he can-cans, one knows it has to be funny...or stupid. But this was funny.

Summary: But I didn't learn anything from it
Review: When my wife and I saw the film in its first theatrical release, several "little old ladies" exiting the theatre said: "But I didn't learn anything about history from this." My wife and I were amused, since the play presents us with a humanized view of our "Founding Fathers" rather than the over-stuffy way they have traditionally been presented: icons and dimi-gods. I agree that certain liberties have been taken with history, and at times the show is slightly burlesqued to get a laugh, but I am still somewhat dumb-founded when I meet people who object the film's (and I assume the play's) presentation of Adams, Jefferson and Co., and still prefer to see them presented in the "old fashioned" way. Over the years, I've watched the truncated version on VHS and TV; I've even seen the laser disc with the restored footage (which was then not color-corrected as it is with the new DVD). I've tried to come up with something new to say that other reviewers here haven't already said, but I can only add that it is terrific to have this film preserved in such a wonderful way, and to see the play presented as it would have been seen on the Broadway stage, and with most of the original cast.
