It's made for a crowd bound by Joseph Smith's Mormon teachings. The 11 hymns and carols of faith and sacred devotion to Jesus and the blush of the holiday season--from "Joy to the World" to "O Divine Redeemer"--are recorded live in digital stereo in the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, under the stellar direction of Jerold Ottley and, yes, the music itself is glorious, tear-jerking, and heartwarming. But the presentation--complete with sermonistic "Spoken Word" by J. Spencer Kinard, which dwells on Mormon dogma--is something else. Included are ritualistic and stalwart scenes of Christmas that, though innocently tinged, feel like subversive recruiting Christmas cards.
