Evolution's team of Alienators seem anything but foreign, which is because each of them is repackaged from some other series or pop-culture conceit. Imagine Backstreet Boys bagging the music, bringing on a Charlie's Angel, and adopting Pikachu, and the picture crisps. Weirdly, it works--the over-5 crowd, taking a cue from their tween siblings, won't waste time cozying to this crew of cartoon clichés, based on the movie of the same name. The key is coolness, as it applies to kids. Whereas three guys, a gal, and a gas-bag critter tasked with saving the planet from evolving aliens might normally need a chill pill, this gang keeps it light, tossing off one-liners when the going gets hairy. Pop this in for the after-school crowd. Its mix of quirky hipsters and sci-fi won't play itself out prematurely among boys or girls, and fans of the series it spawned will love settling in to see how it all began. --Tammy La Gorce
