Summary: Expected more...
Review: This is a good photography book. It gives you a nice overview of making great pictures. But it doesn't explain a great deal about exposure and other aspects of photography in detail.

I wanted to understand the basics in depth. So, on my friend's recommendation, I got 'Nature photography field guide' by John Shaw. Wow! it is the book to understand the basics of exposure and all other aspects of photography in a greater depth. This book is just worth for it's great pictures! I'm sure you love it!!

In a nutshell, if you want a general overview and tips on photography (or if you are an intermediate level photographer), buy this book . On the other hand, if you'd like to grasp the basics of photography(or if you are a beginner), then get the John Shaw's book mentioned above.

Good luck!

Summary: Lot of useful information
Review: Very good book for beginner as well as someone with some photography experience. A very good and concise introduction to modern photography. About half the book are contribution from experienced national geographic photography assignment photographer. This section provides excellent pointers to anyone who want to improve their skills.

Summary: Good Reference Guide
Review: I purchased this guide in the HOPES, that it would give me some tips to help me with my digital photography. I found the guide to be more "tailored", to those still using 35mm film. Although, many of the techniques can be transferred over to that of digital media, I was still wishing that this guide was more digital content heavy.(I mean, digital cameras are everywhere now)

I'd say that, if your looking for a good general guide to get you STARTED, then this book is for you. If on the other hand, you want something more tailored to digital media, then pass on this and pick-up something that is written solely for that purpose.

Summary: GREAT HELP!! FOR UNDERSTANDING HOW TO TAKE GREAT PICTURES!
Review: In my search for books that would explain great picture taking in layman term this book kept coming up time after time after time. I did not believe that it would be of much help since it was published in 1999. . .I wanted something more recent with references of TODAY's cameras. When the tremendous price break for a used copy appeared on the Amazon.com site, I decided to order it. Boy! Oh Boy, was I glad that I did. This book does not disappoint. It is very readable; easy understandable; and very portable. The size allows you to take it with you in the field. A must for someone like myself with little experience and know how and too old to remember all that one reads.

My most enjoyable part is the layout. . .pages covered with loads of pictures and photographers tips for immediate consumption. Presented are works and habits of various award winning photographers with insight into their creative and dedicated work ethics that forces them to keep sharp and, consequently, their eye on the prize! I can't put this book down. . .

Summary: Great entry to mid level tutorial!!!
Review: I'm not a pro. Actually, I broke my old point and shoot camera recently and bought a nice SLR one. Yes, I studied a little bit of photo techniques&composition in school but that was long time ago and I decided to update my knowledge a little bit and get a good tutorial. I bought this book and it is exactly what I need. You know, amateurs know rules and pros know exceptions. This book is written by real pros and they teach you not the standard rules only but they also explain why and when they can be violated. Basically they teach you how pros think and work.

What's bad? It gives you some ideas but doesn't provide detailed directions how to get there. It's based on film photography and gives just a brief overview on digital photo. Some advices, like use tripod, spend days with your subject to catch a right moment are ok for pros, but probably don't make sense for majority of amateurs.

If you want to buy just one photography tutorial this is it. It'll give you all basic techniques like any standard tutorial plus some ideas on real advanced stuff so you know where to go if you want to keep going.

Summary: If you can only buy one book on photography buy this one.
Review: This is a definitive guide to photography that takes you from beginning to end. Starting from the basics of light, the camera, composition and exposure. In the latter pages, P. Burian and R. Caputo are joined by other pros to give you more helpful hints. You will find yourself coming back to this book again and again regardless of your skill level.

Summary: A great photography book for everyone.....
Review: I got this book aboout 2 years ago and I am still loving it. When I got this book I was working at a photolab where most of the customers were eather soccer mom's taking pictures of the kids or serious amatures who had full time jobs and photography was a serious hobby. I usd the book as a lab reference book to show the customers how to take better pictures the simple way. The book is layed out good with "tip" boxes and charts. The book also has a grey card at the back of the book. This book is a must have for everyone...soccer mom's to the professional.

Summary: Must have for any photographer - Outstanding book
Review: I used to be into photography big time and got away from it for a long time due to some personal reasons. Decided to get back into it again and I tried to get a good reference book to refresh my memory. Let me tell you that after reading a page from this book I fell inlove with it and bought it. This book is yet the best, I emphesize, the BEST book one could buy in the field of photography. I hope these authores would publish the second one but I think they covered everything in this book. I rate This book for a novice photographer as well as big-time Pro photographer. There is something new and interesting in each page for any kind of photography level. I absolutely recommend this book, it reads like a novel you won't regret -- buying it.
