Summary: Great for beginners!
Review: If you're just starting out & want a book that covers the basics and beyond, this book is it! I went to the book store & looked over 5 or 6 different photography "beginners" books, including the "Idiot's Guide" and "Dummies" books. I decided to get this National Geographic book and was surprised at how easy it was to understand!

I think the added plus to this book is that it not only covers all the technical aspects of photography, it also gives the reader advice on the "artistic" aspects - i.e. what makes a good composition for a photograph.

The book is also full of great *COLOR* photographs - great examples to give you ideas for your own photos. Plus, it includes wonderful, clear graphics that explain the "technical" ideas and concepts.

If you are just starting out, I suggest this book! The first 150 or so pages covers all the basics, and the rest of the book helps you develop your skills and gives you great ideas on how to improve your photographs.

If you have any questions about this book, feel free to email me at bean_soldier@hotmail.com.

Summary: Excellent book for any kind of photographer, prof or beginn
Review: First of all I should say that this book deserves 6 stars instead of 5. It helped me to understand how to take pictures and how to create new art works with just any kind of camera.

So, the contents are the next ones:

It starts with the esential basics of photography. There you'll find all the explanations you need if you are a beginnner photographer and you are just starting. It shows you how the camera works with nice pictures and graphs and drawings. Then you have all the basics of photography like, focus, exposition, film speed, deep of field, shutter speed, F stop and all the items you'll need to know to get the picture you want. Then it shows you some ways to take pictures without a tripod and a flash to get clear pics without getting fuzzy blurry images.

After that it explains you about the composition of a image. How to get the attention of someone seeing it, the rule of thirds, foreground frames, and other interesting topics that teaches you that every corner and cm of the picture is important to get a nice photogtraph. Then it shows you some kinds of cameras and the pros and cons os each one, so if you are planning to buy one and you are lost, buy this book, you'll find a clear explanation of each kind of camera and in witch things are used for. After this chapter you'll find a clear explanation of any kind of lenses and their uses and their pros and cons too. It shows you how they work and how they deform the reality. In the next chapter it talks about LIGHT and different kind of techniques and how they affect and help you to get nice pics. THen It talks about different kind of flashes and lights and way of light rooms to get clear and outstanding photographs.

And that's how the book continues showing the different terms (exposure, kind of films etc) that helps you to get the photograph you want and how to photograph dofferent kind of objets (like people, animals, flowers etc).

Conclussion: this is THE BOOK, if you are a beginner and it'll help you to raise your knowledge about photographs if you are a Pro. And all with a nice full collored format, with tips and examples and nice pictures of some of the best photographers of the world (PETER BURIAN and ROBERT CAPUTO).

Summary: Informative and entertaining
Review: The National Geographic Photography Field Guide is an excellent guide for beginners and a good reference for the more experienced. The information is clearly presented and features such as tips in the margins make the book easy to read as well as to use for later reference. Both the technical aspects of photography and photograph composition were discussed succinctly.

Moreover, the book itself was entertaining reading and I enjoyed the sections where various photographers' styles were showcased. Not only were these sections useful in learning how to go about taking pictures, they were interesting in their own right as glimpses into how different artists work.

Summary: Great Book !
Review: This is a great book with a lot of info in it. However, it rates as a very good book for serious amateurs. Including a grey card on the inside of the covers was a great idea. Kudos !

Summary: A book to keep in your camera bag (or close to your heart!)
Review: The words 'National Geographics' says it all. This book is 100% quality from start to finish. Excellent pictures accompanied by informative and inspirational writing. This book really gets you thinking in a way most other photography books doesn't even come close to do. It makes you just want to grab your camera and start taking better and better pictures. And better pictures you WILL take after reading this book. The part where other professional photographers share their views and experiences are excellent. A book focused on the picture taking, not the equipment. Remember: It is the person, not the camera who takes the pictures. Keep this book close to your heart, or in the camera bag. It's a small treasure!

Summary: The Best Book for Learning the Basics and Beyond
Review: This book will really show you the ropes. It explains the concepts and techniques very well with matching colorful graphics and illustrations. The pictures are awesome! The pictures alone will show you how to do or not to do photography. I like the chapter where the some photographers shared their thoughts and some tips on photography--you will not see this in other books. Buy this one. You will never regret it.

Summary: A Seminar in Photgraphy from NGS
Review: This book is terrific. Stop worrying about equipment -- people make great photographs, not cameras. This book shows you how. The explanations are written in plain English; the copious (and beautiful) pictures illustrate principles; and the advice is priceless. You have to spend a lot of money taking photography classes and attending seminars to learn what this book conveys in a short space. Just get out there and make pictures; do not worry about getting the longest zoom lense or the camera with the most electronic features. In truth, the best pictures are made from the simplest, least automated cameras -- because they don't get in the way.

Good luck!
