Rating: Summary: Without a doubt the best Watercolor book on the market Review: If you are a watercolor painter and want to read the best, this book is a must! I tell all my students it is a requirement in my class. I wish you would do another Jeanne. Marcia Moses
Rating: Summary: Jeanne Dobie is a true master! Review: Jeanne Dobie is an absolute master of compisition, light and texture, and even though this book focuses ostensibly on color, anyone at any level can benefit from her other chapters as well. I have thrown out so many of my "excess" colors and find that I can accomplish so much with Jeanne's more limited palette.
Rating: Summary: The best book on color I have ever read or owned. Review: Jeanne Dobie truly makes color sing. She also makes color theory understandable. Her paintings are beautiful. I have had this book for several years and have gone through it over and over. A real color bible. If I could only have one book in my art instruction library this would be the one.
Rating: Summary: Book is Excellent But Needs Updating Review: Jeanne Dobie's book was recommended in the watercolor class I took and at first when I looked at the pictures I was not interested as I do not care for Dobie's style as illustrated in the book and would never buy the book based on her work. However, after borrowing the teacher's copy I began reading the text and found the information valuable and useful after trying the suggested exercises. Dobie's book along with Tom Hill's The Watercolorist's Complete Guide to Color combine as excellent references for learing to use color pigments and making colors "sing" instead of making mud.I am giving Dobie's book 1 instead of 5 stars as it seriously needs updating considering some of the pigments Dobie uses are not lightfast and the inclusion of more modern pigments that replace these non-lightfast pigments would be useful all considering the book was first published in 1986, which is 18 years ago. The lightfast references I am going by are Hilary Page and Michael Wilcox's books analyizing watercolor pigments. Aside from Dobie's use of some outdated pigments (see handprint.com) the book is an excellent reference and her advice as to color mixing valuable.
Rating: Summary: Still the best transparent watercolor book Review: Jeanne Dobie's exploration of the classic transparent watercolor palette is still the most enlightening introduction to the qualities that make watercolor painting unique and beautiful. A must for every serious watercolorist's bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: A book to read over and over Review: Jeanne Dobie's use of color, and her inspiring instructions on how to really make color work for you, take water color instruction out of the "fill in the blank" mode, and really open the doors to creating art. There is something here for every level of ability. My copy rarely gets put away!
Rating: Summary: outstandingly clear Review: Like the brilliant hues in her examples, Ms. Dobie's book is outstandingly clear and strong. Her logical, step-by-step examples give the lie to the notion that creative people can't explain their gift. She doesn't need to write another book because this says it all, but such an inspirational work makes you want to hear more. This book has prompted me to cull from my library books by other authors that now look dull after experiencing Making Color Sing.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for getting WC to do what it does best - color! Review: Ms. Dobie is one of the great masters of the WC medium. In this book, she does not hold back, nor does she treat you like a beginner. She focuses on mastering color with techniques specific to WC. This is not a general how-to book... there's PLENTY of them elsewhere! This book covers the area what most appeals to me about WC... color-forming!
Rating: Summary: Great book!! Review: One of a very few great books in watercolor. She gives many great philosophical and technical advices on color, shape, composition, and painting in general.
Rating: Summary: A Breakthrough Book Review: The information I obtained from this book took me to an entirely different level as a Watercolorist. Bravo to Jeanne Dobie for sharing her discovery with all of us.
