Rating: Summary: One of the best figure drawing books I've encountered! Review: From the first page I turned in Hogarth's Drawing the Human Head I was hooked. Little did I know that there was an even more exciting, innovative book from the same author! Dynamic Figure Drawing is the best book of it's kind! Instead of taking the overused step-by-step approach--which may do more harm than help--this book allows the reader to simply absorb all that is needed from useful explanations and beautiful sketches.
Rating: Summary: Modern-day Michelangelo Review: Hogarth was referred to as the "Michelangelo of comics" because of his complete mastery of drawing the human form. This book justifies the title. Anyone who aspires to drawing forms that appear to have volume and weight absolutely must have this book--it helped me immensely. No one has given such an exhaustive and precise explanation of the body as a solid mass before or since the publication of this book.
Rating: Summary: Animator's Ultimate Resource Review: I agree with most everyone, this book is a must get for all animators and professionals trying to draw/model a human figure.
Rating: Summary: Beware, ALL beginners! Review: I bought this title recently in the hope it would take the strain out of drawing the human form. Alas, how wrong I was. Although Burne Hogarth is an excellent artist with exceptional ability, this book just makes things more daunting, especially for the beginner. His methods for drawing the human figure is so complex, it defies belief! His technique may work like magic for him a few others but for us mere mortals, his way will make you want to give up drawing right away. Unless you have extensive drawing training at a high level, leave this book until much later. Although a high quality book with sound knowledge, it's usability is practically zero.
Rating: Summary: Another former student weighs in... Review: I had two semesters with Mr. Hogarth at Otis Art College in Los Angeles. He was a remarkable teacher, and his drawing style, and teaching style, is certainly "dynamic". All his books are great, but "Dynamic Figure Drawing" is a particular favorite. While you may find Hogarth's comic book roots not to your taste (and you don't want to have your art look too "Hogarth") - don't deprive yourself of his books. He has much to offer, and many details about the figure that are very valuable. My drawing has been forever impacted and improved because of what he taught me - in class and from his books. Just because you absorb much from his books (and you will) it doesn't follow that you will adopt his "comic book" style as well. Learn from him, and many other artists' works, and consider yourself well-rounded!

Rating: Summary: The most influencial book of my life as an artist! Review: I picked this book up at a second store when I was a teenager, intriqued by the images and dynamic renderings of the human form. From the moment I opened Burne Hogarth's book I was hooked on his style and understanding of the figure in space. This book has helped me countless times as an art student trying to get things right. A must have book for artists everywhere. I also suggest his other books.
Rating: Summary: A staple for any artist.. struggling or otherwise Review: I've been Drawing Comics for the past eight years and i recomend this book to everyone. Gives great insight into anatomy and not the traditional rehash of 7 1/2 head tall three heads wide etc. This book has helped me out alot giving tips and tricks to prooblem areas like the back muscles and different perspectives and especially those pesky hands. Most other books concentrate on the every day anatomy, this book gives what it says "DYNAMIC!" A MUST if you enjoy drawing comics. Thanks Burne!!
