Rating: Summary: And yet.... Review: Over all it is a solid introduction to color pencil. It has advanced techniques for those with the skills already in place. I can't give it five stars because of the samples which are drawn from the same fruit/lace/flowers crowd one sees dominating shows. It would be a more effective book if they drew their examples from a wider range of styles and subject matter. MOST glaring in it's absence is the human form-nude, portrait, draped! If the color pencil is really to be taken seriously more C.P.artists will have to tackle these classic traditional subjects.
Rating: Summary: Colored Pencil Artist's Dream Book Review: Thank you Ms. Newton and Ms. Gildow for putting together this wonderful colored pencil book. I have several books on the subject of colored pencil artwork and I think this one is the best of all of them. The information offered is easily adapted to any style of colored pencil work. Everything a beginner or a pro needs is in this book. It's format is intelligent, easy on the eye and logical. The artwork is breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring. If you have any questions about working with colored pencils after reading this book, then read it again! It's in there!
Rating: Summary: Book offers solutions and so much more Review: The Colored Pencil Solution Book offers not only practical solutions to problems encountered by the colored pencil artist, as the title suggests, but also the chance to view colored pencil work at its best. In addition, it offers the reader a chance to practice color application and techniques with 20 step-by-step, easy-to-follow demonstrations. The authors' also offer a peek at their studio setups and a wealth of information on materials and methods. All in all, it is a book I am thoroughly enjoying!
Rating: Summary: Very Good With Only One Drawback Review: There is a lot of good information for every colored pencil artist in this book. I certainly have gotten my money's worth. It is excellently organized and answers many questions and problems. However, the sole style represented throughout is super realistic. What you see pictured on the cover represents the one style shown throughout the book. If this is not your style, and it is not mine, then some of the information you will have to try to adapt to your own style. Some of the rest of the information you will not be able to adapt at all if you have a different style. The colored pencil field desperately needs a book showing styles that are not so realistic. I don't regret buying this book though. Despite my having a radically different style from theirs, there was still a lot of information for me to glean from its pages.
Rating: Summary: A colored pencil enthusiast from Alliance, Ohio Review: This book is a must-have! Not only for those who work primarily in colored pencil, but for anyone who is interested in drawing, still life, the use of color, composition, and realistic style. The book is clearly written, well organized, packed with information, and a delight to view. The many beautiful photographs of completed works rendered solely by these two accomplished artists distinguish this book. The compatible style of Janie Gildow and Barbara Benedetti Newton better support the narrative guidelines and step-by-step demonstrations than any other drawing book in my collection. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to explore or expand their options in artistic expression.
Rating: Summary: Colored Pencil Solution Book Review: This book is wonderful. It is full of step by step easy to follow instructions, along with technics of color pencil, how to draw realistic glass, and metal containers, and those fuzzy peaches. Being a beginner in color pencil, I have found this book full of useful information.
Rating: Summary: Most comprehensive how-to coloured pencil book I've seen Review: This is a pretty good book. I've never seen a better 'how-to' coloured pencil book then this one. Everything is so clear and understandable with lesson examples in the back of the book. If you want to learn colour pencil then I completely recommend this book. However as someone else pointed out. I feel that the images are a bit lacking. If anyone wants my advice - buy Bernard Poulin's book 'The Complete Colored Pencil Book' which has amazing imagery and this one for the know how. Between the two you'll probably never need to buy another book on this subject again.
PS: The images shown on the 'look inside' feature of this site make the book look better then it is. The real images are a little more boring in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: Loved the Book!! Review: This is another wonderful colored pencil book to add to any collection. It covers so many different areas of colored pencils that no matter what your level of experience with the medium is, amateur or professional, you will benefit by using this book. Way to go, Janie and Barbara!
Rating: Summary: Colored Pencil Solution Book Review: What a great book! I'm a watercolorist but picked up this book because it looked interesting. Well, after reading it, I was so inspired that I've ordered a set of pencils and can't wait to get started using this - at least for me - new medium. I can't say that I'd give up watercolor but I think I've dicovered a new love! There is so much useful information in this book about color, color values, composition, set-up and so much more that I would certainly recommend it for any artist's library regardless of their medium of choice. The artwork alone is worth buying this book! I would have rated it higher than five stars if I could have!
