Rating: Summary: Great for beginners, but look elsewhere. Review: As a graphic design student, I've read numerous books about typography. This book is excellent for a person who's interested in knowing the basics of type and more. However, there is better books out there than this. I recommend the book "A Typographic Workbook" by Kate Clair. Designing with Type really shouldnt be used as a textbook simply because it doesnt cover nearly as much information. If you don't mind spending the extra ... look elsewhere!
Rating: Summary: A solid introduction Review: Designing With Type is an excellent introduction to the art of typography. Any student of graphic design should have this book in his/her library. The book is spiral bound which makes it easy to lay flat and examine the many examples of typefaces given.
One of the most valuable aspects of the book is how it takes 5 classic typefaces (Garamond, Baskerville, Bodoni, Century Expanded and Helvetica) and gives examples of each typeface in a large range of point sizes and leadings. Typography owes as much to visual measurement as it does to mechanical measurement. The reader is shown first hand what how the interplay between point size, leading and line length work to make a text readable (or not readable!).
The reader cannot help but come away from reading this book having a firm foundation in typographic skills on which to build their own design abilities.

Now with the addition of the website...and its numerous links to design projects from schools around the world, as well as suggestions for books, magazines, organizations, and other web sites, it is a truly unique and invaluable tool for both teachers and students.
Rating: Summary: New Web Site Too Review: I have used this book both as a student and now as an instructor of typography and find it to be one of the most valuable resources on the subject. There is also a free new web site that supplements the book. I have found that students benefit greatly from using the book along with the website. I would strongly recommend checking out: ...

Rating: Summary: Great book Review: I use this book in a fundamentals class. It has solid exercises and simple, comprehensive info on typography.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful for Typography 1 & 2 Courses. Review: Judging from my own experience teaching typography, students appreciate the simple, logical approach to the fundamentals of typography found in James Craig's book 'Designing with Type.' This book deserves praise for enabling students to explore essential knowledge on the subject. More recently, I've been delighted to find there is a free-entry web site associated with the book that provides students-- and professionals--a world-wide forum and many typographic resources. This site is located at Designingwithtype.com for anyone interested.
Rating: Summary: A must for ALL who really want to understand typography Review: Many people think they understand type because they can make a page look pretty good with Word or Quark. Until you read Mr. Craig's book-- Designing With Type, you don't know what you're missing. You'll learn all the fundamentals and will be hooked on creating great type before long. Definitely a keeper!
