Rating: Summary: AN EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGE Review: No book of its kind (even Chop Suey Club by Bruce Weber) has ever given us such a close view of the relationship between the model and the photographer. You were simply drawn into their world flipping through this book.Greg Gorman has definitely relaxed and let his guard down this time, which gave us an amazing perspective of the other side of his work, other than his now rather well known immaculately styled portraits. These all results in a wonderful rich combination of well crafted fashion styled works and spontaneuos emotional shoots in the school of Nobuyoshi ARAKI. Non of the shoots should be viewed on its own or you'll miss understanding the true feeling of this book. Definitely a highly collectable item.
Rating: Summary: A Picture is Worth How Many Words? Review: The dust jacket description of this book as "Shocking" is the gravest underestimation I've heard this week. I never imagined newsstand fleshmag material elevated to fine art, the model expressing the same delightful tone of tawdry sexuality and the photographer the same intent as those (not so cheap anymore) monthly thrills, pictured for posterity. Bruce Weber's "Chop Suey Club" (which I bought the same day as this one, triumphantly for only a couple hundred dollars) is sentimental, but I would say this collection is more valuable for its daring. Therefore, if you have any inclination towards this book BUY IT NOW!!!!!! I won't feel sorry for you when you have to bid at auction for this book for hundreds more, because you know how Arena Editions are, as our beloved "Chop Suey Club" is: rare, limited edition printings, instant collector's items, etc....It's almost a sin to devalue it and tear off the shrink wrap. And no, I'm not going to sell my copy, so that's one less on the future market.
Rating: Summary: Betwixt and Between Review: What was Greg Gorman thinking when he decided to publish this book? The photos are boring, the model is boring, the style is derivative. The twinkboy model has two expressions - bored and extremely bored. It's nice that the young lad was able to accompany Mr. Gorman to Paris and the south of France and other exciting locations, but the locations seem to have no effect on twinkboy. Greg Knudson gets his fifteen minutes of fame in this book. I have never encountered a model that produced such a negative effect on me. If I could give this a rating of zero I would, but my choices are limited to one to five. I sent my copy back the first day for a credit.
Rating: Summary: Caveat Emptor Review: While I must admit that Gorman is to be congratulated on his courage in bringing this book to press, it cannot be stressed too strongly that this is no 'coffee table' book. Composition notwithstanding, some of the photographs are pornographic. If pornographic = bad in your estimation then do not buy this book and stay with something a bit more Ritts-like. If however you are open to a new and decidedly different approach to male nude photography then pick up your copy ASAP. Firsts only happen once, I am glad that this one didn't pass me by.
