Rating: Summary: ~ Not worth the price Review: i'm growing tired of photographers doing nudes just for the sake of doing nudes. it seems that nudes sell no matter the quality of the images, and doing them is selling out by taking the easy route to making money in photography. i would be much more impressed with a photographer who becomes successful by creating beautiful images despite the subject matter not because of it.that said, i appreciate the female form and the black and white images in this book meet that appreciation to an extent. but they often have a flat snaphot like quality to them, with high key lighting-the images certainly aren't high art. some of them are even blurry or not aesthetically pleasing to the point that if i was the editor, i would have excluded them. in many of the images where a television is in the background, the photographer has put a still frame of a man's face (maybe his own) there. i find this very contrived and believe the images would be better without this unnatural busy-ness in the background.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books in my huge collection Review: I've seen those pictures for the first time several years ago somewhere in internet, probably, in Nerve. Finally I've got the book. I adore it. I've got huge collection of photo albums. This is one of few books I love most of all among them. Hey, guys who throw this book away, will you be so kind to throw them my way? I gave this book as a present several times already, and no one copy will be superfluous for me. (I'll cover shipping.) Mr.Gorman's style looks inappropriate for those "professional" photographers, how knows much about light, posing, etc., but producing nothing except boring "correctly-exposed" pictures. What I found going through lots of photos everybody interested in photography seen during their lives, -- it's important what it is about, not how it's done to remember the name of the author. When at the same time it's done perfectly in terms of composition, you just love it. What I feel looking at his pictures, is envy. Envy to his ability to set up environment, to move lamp or chair to the only position it should be, to his fantasy (can you use your small place to create a book?), to choose models and select negatives to print. Have you seen "Once" by Wim Wenders? "Go-sees" by Juergen Teller? "Europeans" by Cartier Bresson? "Apartment 17" is from from this list I'd take to another planet. ...Waiting for the "Digitals" as a book.
Rating: Summary: True Trash Review: In a word, "sophomoric." Products like this make me never want to order online again. As a professional fine art photographer who appreciates form, lighting, composition and subject matter, I believe the positive reviews for this book may have been posted by the author or by one of the author's friends; perhaps one of the "models." If you enjoy looking at pictures made with a point-and-shoot camera of hairy, dirty women exposing their crotches then this book is certainly for you. Better yet, surf the naughty Internet sites...I'm sure the photography is better (and probably free). I threw my copy away within 5 minutes. But kudos to the author, through book reviews and a halfway decent cover shot, he got me to open my wallet. Silly me. I judged a book by it's cover...Arrgh!
Rating: Summary: There is a Heaven and it is in Gorman's Apartment Review: Masterful. I have been a long time fan of Mr. Gorman's work since I first saw his photographs in the photo magazine Black + White. The title "Naked in Apartment 7" refers to the beautiful naked models Gorman photographs in his New York apartment (I would love to live across the street from him with my binoculars at the ever ready) To call his work voyeuristic is an understatement to what his photographs represent, he is an active participant and the models seem to be performing for him, we are the voyeurs looking at what he has captured for himself. The photographs range from the simple half dressed women standing in his kitchen to the open legged nude in the full throws of her own enjoyment spread out on Gorman's couch seeming to explore her own ultra exhibitionist fantasies for Gorman. These women are intense and beautiful, they seem to be driven by their own strength and not by the male ego.
Rating: Summary: Pretentious and Boring Review: Porn disguised as high art. Need I say more?
Rating: Summary: True Art Review: The photographer has a well balanced approach to the finer art of nude photography. His unique style is evident on every page of the book. Not since Ansel Adams have I enjoyed the art of black and white photography more. The overt sexuality of the models is evident in all of the artistic pictures. Beauty is only skin deep, but these pictures go to the bone. I highly recommmend this book to all fans of black and white photography.
Rating: Summary: I want more Review: This is a book that needs a sequel. I can not get enough of the photographs in this book. Each model and her placement in the setting is a story in itself. I feel that I am seeing the true nature of each women when it comes to pleasing themselves. Not all of the models are as explicit as others, but this is what gives the book a wide range. I find myself changing favorites every time I open Naked in Apartment 7 "she is my favorite... no she is my favorite... no wait this is my favorite photo..." and on and on. Like a good movie it makes you wonder: where are the characters now? what happened in the scenes that follow the ending? can't it just keep going on? why does it have to end? My two cents.
Rating: Summary: hohum Review: To be honest lets start with the fact that anyone with a good point and shoot camera can do as good a job with the photographs of these models. The photos were at best amature..even the posing was dull..seems that most of the models had some problem with their hands...always wanting to cover up something...this book would be a lot better if the models had some direction as to how to pose...also some of the photos were blured for some reason. The book would be alot better if the models would get out of the bath room!
Rating: Summary: NOT AT ALL like Helmut Newton...! Review: When you think of great photography, one immediately thinks of Helmut Newton, Peter Lindburgh, Walter Chin, Ellen Von Unwerth, etc... Each of them has the ability to shoot women (clothed and otherwise) in a tasteful yet provocative way. Unfortunately, "Naked In Apartment 7" is just the opposite. At first glance, it gives the impression of a photographer using his pictures as a device to get laid. The pictures are just a stones throw away from ones you'd find in a bad black and white pornography magazine. Think of a Helmut Newton nude: such contrast, such composition -- so much thought put into the work. Here however, you have a seemingly boring background (a random apartment) and average contrast and average art direction (and that's being generous). And what of overindulgence...? Not only does the author find his way into a number of the pictures painfuly trying to look as though it was all just spontaneous, but he also manages to convinently frame a number of his other pictures in the background. If you're going to shoot naked women (and you're not Pamela Janson or Patrick Demarchelier, etc) you better have a good sense as to how and why you're doing it. Getting a bunch of girls up in your little apartment and having them get naked, to me, is just not enough. Not even the lighting suggests anything more than an amateur testing of some basic key to fill ratios, if even that. Was the entire book shot in a day with just one flash...? As with painting, in my opinion, I believe that it is important to first be able to shoot like some of the best and then create your own style and approach. From this book, it doesn't appear as though the author even understand the basics of lighting and compostion -- even when lighting is from a single source. I thought the pictures were weak and almost tasteless. ...
