Summary: Disappointed by the quality of the reproducions.
Review: A thick, beautiful looking coffee table book, but if you seek an approximation of Rothko's work, you won't find it here. Rothko's work was full of vibrancy and beauty, but this book offers flat, lifeless reproductions. The blacks are not black and shadow details do not exist. The colors are often so far from the originals that you must use the artist's titles for clues as to what the actual colors were.

Summary: An exquisite presentation
Review: American artist Mark Rothko's artworks represents the very foundations of the Abstract Expressionist movement, and his key works are here presented in full-page color, introduced by essays from his contemporaries. This superbly produced volume with its exquisite presentation considers all of Rothko's works and contributions and is an essential acquisition for any serious collection on the Abstract Expressionist movement.

Summary: Simply Beautiful
Review: I completely disagree with the earlier review about the quality of reproductions in this work. The colors are stunning, and this book is so well organized and detailed that it makes it a real pleasure to dive into. Nothing can compare to seeing these inspirational works in person, but if you saw the show, you have to have this book. If you missed the show, you have to have this book. Lose yourself in these paintings and you will find so much...personal revelation, power and resolve. Its a must-own for the true Rothko fan.

Summary: important book for the catologing of an important collection
Review: i haven't read any of the reviews on this book. i bought because i believe it, along with Jeffrey Weiss's book (of the Rothko exhibition) is the first attempt, not only to catolog, but to denote the influences affecting Mark Rothko, who like Frank Lloyd Wright stands out yet typifies the age

Summary: beautiful book of color reproductions
Review: rothko was prolific, and it would be hard to get everything in one book, but here you will certainly find pieces from beginning to end. i personally appreciate seeing the progression of an artist's work; it's so much more informative than a random assemblage of pieces that "look pretty," although this book is that too. my copy appears quite true in its reproduction of the paintings, and i highly recommend it for the range and quality of the work.

Summary: as if Rothko becomes color blind
Review: the layout of this book is fine, but the printing is poor, the color is just not there...Rothko's work always evoke something in me when i look at it, but the coloring is so bad that it was just like looking at black and white rectangles in this book. Very disappointed. (refer to paper back edition)

Summary: Nice reproductions. I you love Rothko, this should be yours
Review: The show was overwhelming. If you get Rothko, get the book. If you don't, try harder. He was ahead of his time and the greatest artist of our time. Sit in front of an original Rothko for an hour (even better with your glasses off and a buzz on) and listen with your soul.

Summary: It's Awesome
Review: This book contains many of Rothko's early, later, and intermediate works making it easy for the reader to see the trasitions that he made. The beautiful reproductions in this book are almost as good as visiting the actual museums. I could practically feel his power eminating from the pages. His life story could have been better told, but the dramatic reproductions more than make up for the less than perfect prose. I highly recommend this book not only for Rothko enthusiastics like me but also for all art lovers in general. Whether you understand, pretend to, or blatantly dislike his works this is a book that should not be missed.

Summary: A treasure
Review: This book is a beautiful retrospective with diverse commentary and succinct history. It's a treasure to own.
