Rating: Summary: Huge and Exhaustive Review: This book is a huge work of art in and of itself. The contents span from art in the Ancient World (Prehistoric, Egyptian, Ancient Near Eastern, etc.), the Middle Ages (Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, etc), the Renaissance to the Rocco, and the Modern World. Naturally, the book is very well illustrated. However, it is also well written. Description of the art as well as the time, artist's life, history, motivation, etc. are included in the text. The book also has some very helpful and detailed time lines between each period. These time lines help the reader be able to visualize the framework in which the art was produced. Since the book is a history of art, merely thumbing through it allows the reader to visually see the changes which have occurred over the various centuries. These changes included the trends which were followed, the rogue artists who followed no trend, and the stylistic changes which occurred, especially in the postmodern "chaotic" period. While the history of philosophy is revealing about the changes (good or bad) in people's thinking, the history of art is revealing about the changes (good and bad) in societies lifestyles and tastes (amongst other things) which reflect that thinking. This book is a telling text with respect to how art has changed, been molded, and publicly demonstrated from its beginnings to the present day. It is well worth the sticker price if for no other reason than it contains some of the greatest works of art ever produced.
Rating: Summary: The best book for beginners on the history of art. Review: This book is the best book for beginners on the history of art and architecture. It contains a brief summery of the various movements in architecture and art whether modern or ancient, with excellent coloured and black and white plates. The newest edition is the best. I reccomend it as a text book for history of art and architecture courses in universities
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, but Textbook Review: This book is the standard in survey Art History courses. It is comprehensive and well illustrated. However, the writting is standard textbook fare. Boring to most, difficult to digest, and definately difficult to sit through after a long day in the class room.

Rating: Summary: No wonder this is so widely used by Universities!!! Review: This is an excellent book for the art student and for anyone who has ever had even a remote interest in the field of art and architecture. As a recent student of Dr. Anthony Janson, this book holds even more meaning. He knows his subject well and has a keen interest in discovering new things to include. To the best of my knowledge a new revision is now underway and is sure to include an expanded section on architecture. This book will always be an exceptional tool in the area of Art History!!
Rating: Summary: Excelente - Muy Interesante Review: Verdaderamente, es un libro para tener en cuenta a la hora de investigar sobre el arte o de conocer un poco mas en profundidad sobre algun aspecto de la historia del arte.
Rating: Summary: Great for everybody Review: When I took history of art at College this was my textbook. I learned more with this book than in five years of history of art at high school. It not only explains art, it also gives a ride through the historical moment that is going on, so it is easier to understand the tendencies and their changes. It is a complete book that uses a not complex language; that is why is GREAT FOR EVERYBODY...
Rating: Summary: FYI: package of what? Review: You may wish to know that this package consists of the single volume 1000 page cloth bound text together with a 250 page study guide (Bernard Shultz, West Virginia Univ. 1998) and an "art on the internet" booklet (93 pages). I have not read the book; the stars given are just for the sake of getting this posted.
