Rating: Summary: Begin here... Review: This book is a lifesaver! I was put in charge of creating a company newsletter and I didn't know where to begin. Someone handed me this book and suddenly the world of design opened up to me. The book is organized around the five major considerations one should have when deciding how to arrange information on a page. There is no expanatory text, just hundreds of examples to show how it can be done. For example, if you need to use a pull quote in a large block of text, this book gives you 24 different ways to do it. And its for more than just newsletters -- brochures, magazines, posters, anything can benefit from the creative ideas presented in this book. And the whole idea is to mix and match so the end result of your work is something different and creative every time.I highly recommend a book like this for people like me with no design experience or even for designers who may not be having a very creative day. The ideas in this book gets the creativity flowing and shows you how to look at documents with design in mind -- to see how the pieces of information fit together, and how one interesting detail can make a dull document come alive.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book - BUY NOW!!! Review: This book isn't available in New Zealand and a tutor had one. I came to Amazon.com and ordered the book. It took 10 days to get to New Zealand and was cheaper than it would be if available here. I design publications, CDs and web sites and the book is incredible for giving me ideas. It's brilliant. If you are a designer and you are a little short of ideas, or you're learning how to design BUY THE BOOK!!!. Thanks too to Amazon.com for perfect service.
Rating: Summary: Hundreds of layouts for the creatively stumped Review: When you first thumb through the book, it seems somewhat corny. The illustrations look deceptively simple and boring. Once you really sit down and pour over the pages, however, you really start to absorb how useful these layouts are. Mixing and matching the components will guarantee that you will never have another boring brochure or newsletter. The designs can also get your brain churning in the direction of a better logo design and a definite help in business card design. The book's stiff spine and short page width means page turning requires two hands and you can't lay this book flat to study designs - a definite failing in a book of this type. In spite of this, it is still an essential to have in your creative library.
