Rating: Summary: A treasury of a book! Review: Les Tres Riches Heures is a little book of marvels. I bought it in a nearby bookstore nearly three months ago, but I still can't stop admiring it. This book contains twelve illustrations of the year's months painted by famous French medieval artists- the Limbourg brothers. Each painting is observed and explained thoroughly. This little book might be a perfect gift. My favourite illustration there is 'November', with the acorn harvest and hogs, that 'greedily eat fallen acorns under the watchful eyes of a dog.' Les Tres Riches Heures illustrates the life of the people of the Middle Ages: starting with a rich great hall of a castle, it takes the reader into a snowy village, mesmerizing woods and lovely groves, grape harvests and winter huntings. The clues are given to the reader in the paintings themselves and he is free to interpret them as he likes.
Rating: Summary: Lovely book but too small for research Review: This is a little itty bitty book. It'd be perfect as a gift to someone vaguely interested in images from the middle ages but it's nearly useless for -real- research. The images are just too small to show all the details.Les Tres Riches Heures is a fantastic set of medieval illustrations done by the Limbourg brothers at the commission of Duc Berry between 1413 and 1416. It's far far more than just the 12 months included in this book.
