Description:

It's a good place to find an idea, within the pages of this little book called A World Without Words. True to its name, it contains not a single complete sentence. Instead, it is composed of more than 100 pages filled with captivating images. This sweet book is really something to discover, and editor Jasper Morrison promotes exploration by creating an environment in which ingenuity appears in a vast array of forms. He roughly limits the scope to icons--some better known than others--of what we commonly consider the modern world. A short list of some of the images: Alvar Aalto's stacking chairs, a Viennese fire hydrant, a man bending tubes in a factory, photographic studies of French soccer players. In fact, readers might also think of this book as an exercise in pictorial nostalgia, a happily incomplete, nonverbal wrap-up of the modernist condition as we know it. --Loren E. Baldwin
