Review: What a joy to be able to read about the Magnum group from their perspective. It's one thing to be able to buy their books but quite another to be able to hear what's behind their work. What impressed me was the intelligence and philosophical underpinnings of these photographers. Also, what shined through was their humbleness. Interestingly, many of these photographers got into Magnum without necessarily knowing how "to do" a picture story--they learned how gradually as they got assignments. There are some real surprises here. It's a delight to read that, even for these guys, making great photographs is hard work. Luck and chance seem to have played a big part in their lives, along, of course, with a certain genius.
