Rating: Summary: The question is left to the reader... Review: I just finished reading this book on the recommendation of a good friend. It is one of the most profound stories I have ever read. The book sets before you a feast of choices to make about yourself and your faith. Your choices will tell you much about who you are. Do you believe, or are you simply adrift on a sea of despair? The Life of Pi was a magical, lyrical journey of mind, body and soul. As one previous reviewer so perfectly stated...just experience it.EBS
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: I found that I couldn't put this book down. The book has so much more depth than simply, "A boy and a bengal tiger lost at sea." It's a story about survival, faith, love, and God.
Rating: Summary: Warm, Fun, Delightful Story... but what of the end? Review: I found this book to be warm and delightful in the beginning, and thought provoking in the middle. Martel writes beautifully and gives his characters so much life! Pi is such a spiritual and spirited young man, you cannot help but love him. I did find myself though, wondering what all the spiritualism was about in the beginning, for other than an occassional mention of prayer on the boat, he didn't use his spiritualism to guide him. It was much more common sense that granted him the ability to survive. The end of the book I thought went completely astray... I was taken completely off guard and wondered where in the world this ending came from! And what ever happend to the "author" -- the one who started out telling the story... it never got back to him! It was a great read - but left me questioning in the end.
Rating: Summary: An Instant Favorite Review: I haven't read a book as good as "Life of Pi" in quite a long time. It easily ranks among "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest" and "All the Pretty Horses" as one of my all-time favorite novels. Yann Martel captures the language of storytelling that few authors achieve.
Rating: Summary: GREAT Read Review: This a very enjoyable novel. A young boy has an Old Man and the Sea adventure. The difference is that his adventure is with Zoo animals.
Rating: Summary: a magical fable Review: This book is easily one of the most fascinating book i have ever read. The story is magical, the imageries breathtaking and the characters ...well they speak to you !! A MUST READ for all ages.
Rating: Summary: slow, makes you think Review: Life of Pi certainly takes its time to get going (the boat doesn't sink for 97 pages, I think... or was it 96?). But once it does, then the real meat of the story begins. Pi's spiritually and physically adverse journey made my jaw drop in awe and wonder, quite literally at points. Towards the end, you are left wondering whether it was a dream, hallucination, reality, or a truly spiritual encounter/experience (those who have finished the book will know what I'm talking about). Granted, the book is slow and took me some time to get through, but I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Huge Disappointment Review: I bought this book based on all the positive reviews I read on Amazon. This book failed on many levels: 1. Does not inspire you to believe in God as it promises. In other words, the philosophy it wants to reveal is lost, just as Pi was lost in the Pacific. 2. Very gory. 3. Slow reading. 4. Lack of character development for Pi. While I can see why some people liked it, it is neither great literature nor inspirational. Do not waste your time.
Rating: Summary: A Captivating Tale Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this work, which takes us along the journey of an ordinary (albeit precocious) young man thrown into extraordinary circumstances. For those readers who may pick this up and find themselves perplexed in the first 50 or so pages: keep reading. Soon enough you will be pulled in and you will not want to put the book down. I found myself thinking about this story for weeks after I had finished reading it. The link between animal instinctual nature and one's spiritual nature was presented well within a rather simple tale. There has been much discussion about whether or not this book "may make you believe in God". That may be an exaggeration, but it will at least make you think about the human need and yearning for tangible answers when unbelievable things happen. This story often takes turns that are quite unbelievable - yet remains oddly palpable at the same time. That's the whole point.
Rating: Summary: Fab Review: This book is both funny and serious, following someone survive against impossible odds, but revealing lots about his cultural background and the cultures he adopted along the way. While it did not by itself make me believe in god (you'll have to read it to understand why I mention this) it certainly comes close. One of the best reads I have had in a long time.
