Rating: Summary: Al Franken/Janeane Garofolo 2012 Review: "If you listen to a lot of conservatives, they'll tell you that that the difference between them and us is that conservatives love America and liberals hate America. That we "'blame America first.'" That we're suspicious of patriotism and always think our country's in the wrong. As conservative radio and TV personality Sean Hannity says, we liberals "'train our children to criticize America, not celebrate it.'" "They don't get it. We love America just as much as they do. But in a different way. You see, they love America the way a four-year-old loves her mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a four-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your loved one grow. Love takes attention and work and is the best thing in the world." -Al Franken (Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them) This quote alone should be enough reason to buy this book. Forget that Franken is a liberal. If you want a "fair and balanced" view of America as we know it today, then you should owe it yourselves to give this book a try. Like most typical Americans my age, I was pretty apathetic when it came to politics, preferring to pass the buck to the "die-hards." But after reading this book, something funny happened. I became angry. I started to care about where our America was heading. As dramatic as it sounds, Franken's book alone, changed the course of my life. It made me think. It made me question. This book should be required reading before the upcoming election.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant political satire Review: "Lies" is an unusual book. It's part political satire and part investigative journalism. It also raises irony to an art form. Franken is unfailingly and scathingly funny. He, backed up by thorough research from his Harvard-based "TeamFranken," evicerates the right by presenting undeniable evidence that they lie, lie some more, and even lie about lying. After reading the chapter "Ann Coulter: Nutcase" you will never again be able to look at her (born in 1963 or 1961 depending on which drivers licence you believe) and not think that she is a bit, well, off. The chapter on HANNITY and colmes is hilarious in outing HANNITY, both literally (why is he so preoccupied with America's homosexuals?), and as the lying sleaze ball that he is, as well as exposing colmes as a willing collaborator in this propaganda machine. The chapter on Bill O'Reilly, Lying, Splotchy Bully, really had me rolling in the aisles. Franken proves him to be not just a congenital liar, but also as terribly mean-spirited, and even emotionally troubled. Think of the worst school yard bully you knew and give him a national television show. The sensible middle in this country needs to understand what these people do. Al Franken has done his nation a service by writing this book. Thanks also to Fox for launching their lawsuit and so helping to promote the book and prove all of Franken's points.
Rating: Summary: A fair and balanced attack of the right Review: "Satire": Noun: A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. That's Webster's definition of satire, a point which many conservatives fail to grasp when dealing with Al Franken. His latest book, "Lies and the lying liars who tell them: A fair and balanced look at the right," is a satire of such tomes as Ann Coulter's "Slander" and Bernard Goldberg's "Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distorts the News." With spot-on research, and yes, even charts, Franken and his group of Harvard student researchers reveal right-wing lies and distortions, such as attacks on Al Gore for saying he "invented the Internet" (he never said he did) and attacks on liberals by Ann Coulter. Franken blows Coulter out of the water, hilariously describing her lie about her "footnotes" in "Treason" (Franken points out that they are actually "endnotes") and then shows how Coulter manipulated facts to present a distorted view of the truth. Franken explores the subject of right-wing bias and distortion of facts, and he does so with intelligence, scathing wit, and, beneath the surface, real anger at the demonization of liberals by conservatives. "Lies" is similar in tone to his 1996 best-seller, "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot." ... "Lies" is a great read and laugh-out-loud funny. Franken is definitely not "returning to obscurity" anytime soon.

Rating: Summary: Mr. Frankenlies is a screwball Review: "A sign comparing President Bush to a chimpanzee was found "in a number of printers" and "laced" throughout reams of paper." I can't believe the Frankenlies spammer is working himself into a froth over things like this. Conservatives are very weird people.
Rating: Summary: "If Americans aren't working, America's not working" Review: "Again and again, Franken finds that the bullies of the right quickly fold when confronted, or are unable to back up their big talk about liberal perfidy and treason when challenged on their facts. Why did O'Reilly come so embarrassingly unhinged earlier this year at the notorious Book Expo showdown with Franken ("We were both there to promote our books," writes Franken. "Bill was hawking his latest, 'Living With Herpes,' while I was promoting -- with evident success -- the book you are enjoying right now")? Because O'Reilly and his fellow thugs on the right are so used to having the stage to themselves that they can't take the heat when it finally comes their way. Franken clearly gets under the skins of the right-wing bully boys. And he does it by smiling right in their faces and letting them know he's on to them. "They used these (lying) tactics to cripple Clinton's presidency," writes Franken. "They used them to discredit Gore and put Bush into office. And they're using them now to silence Bush's critics. Bush is getting away with murder -- just like Clinton did. See? That's how insidious the right-wing modus operandi is. Even I bought into the Clinton murder thing there for a second. And that's my point. We have to be vigilant. "And we have to be more than vigilant. We have to fight back ... Let's call them what they are: liars. Lying, lying liars." Al Franken for president. Or at least governor. David Talbot"
Rating: Summary: The Truth Hurts Review: "Don't waste your money. This book isn't filled with facts. It's just a bunch of rants to get attention. Typical Al." is a comment someone else wrote who probably never read the book. The problem is some Ultra Conservatives refuse to accept the truth even when it slaps them in the face. The problem with the book is that it is rather disjointed and he tends to ramble. It could have been better organized. All Franken has done is basically taken the truth and made it funny so we can laugh at instead of cry about the present political situation in this country. If the book consisted of lies about the people Franken has commented on they would be in court now, just like FOX NEWS that tried, unsuccessfully, for using the words "Fair and Balanced" which they claim they have copyrighted.

Rating: Summary: Uh huh........ Review: "From reading the various negative reviews from like-minded, conservative, patriots, I have determined that Mr. Franken is no good. As the conservatives have pointed out, he is the one lying. I understand that it is not worth their time to actually point out his lies, but I believe them since they love America and Mr. Franken does not. So if I had a copy of this book, I would burn it. Thank you fellow conservatives for your thoughtful reviews." Grow up, Democrat.
