Rating: Summary: Deserved winner of the 2000 Fiction Pulitzer Review: It was heartening and satisfying to learn that Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" has been awarded the 2000 Pulitzer for Fiction. The author and the stories clearly deserve the prize, as well as recent accolades from various sources. Rarely does one see such clarity of prose and language in short stories, while simultaneously containing a subtle and engaging twist at the end of each story that keeps the reader enthralled. I for one look forward to her next book with eagerness. Well done, Ms. Lahiri.
Rating: Summary: stunning Review: Each story in this book is a jewel. Incredibly well-crafted, compelling, and poignant, this book is a must-read. I read this for a book club, and wasn't sure what to expect when I started. But after reading the first story, "A Temporary Matter," I couldn't put the book down. I had to read every story, all in one sitting. I can certainly see why it just won the Pulitzer. Anyone who's ever skipped continents will feel the stories resonating long after they finish the book. I'm looking forward to Ms. Lahiri's next effort.
Rating: Summary: Deserving of the top prize Review: I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that this title received the Pulitzer Prize for top fiction title yesterday. I read this book this past summer and must admit I finished it in 2 days. I was so sad when the book ended. I wanted more, more of Jhumpa's delicious stories. I felt I was present in each of the stories. I could smell the food, or see the candlelight, and I was there sitting on the piano bench in the house. Each story drew me in emotionally, I could almost relate to each story, the isolation, the separation, the alienation of each character. It is good writing that transports a reader into the book. Jhumpa has an enticing way with words in her first collection of stories. I cannot wait until her next book is released!
Rating: Summary: Flawless Prose, Original Tales Review: Jhumpa Lahiri's collection of stories is truly a work of brilliance. The prose flows smoothly and flawlessly, each sentence reads so easily one can only marvel at its construction. The content deals with Indians, Americans, Indians in America and vice-versa, but the struggles are universal, the conflicts real and complex. Their take is unapologetic, fresh and creative. Lahiri is a gifted story teller. "A Temporary Matter" and "Sexy" are my favorites, but they're up against tough competition! Like Tony Earley, Salman Rushdie and Garcia Marquez, Lahiri explores a new avenue in short stories in a different way, creating and setting new standards in prose.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites -- I can read it over and over Review: This is one of my favorite books of short stories - next to Divakaruni's Arranged Marriage. This book is filled with wonderful stories of different phases in people's lives. I love the way she expresses each detail - you feel as if you are watching all these people in action. I look forward to reading more books by this expressive and beautiful authors - if I could ever become a writer, I wish I could have the kind of effect on people as she has had on me.
Rating: Summary: Every me and every you Review: This collection of stories taking place either in India or New England explores the differing ways people can be foreigners in strange or familiar ways and lands. Lahiri's eloquent storyweaving is full of humor and confusion, and is an utter joy to read. I look forward to a full novel by her.
Rating: Summary: Why the vitriol? Review: I thought this a lovely collection of short stories and I must admit I'm a bit confused at the vitriolic negative reviews (although I'm glad to see them so overwhelmed by the positive ones). Ms. Lahiri is, indeed, a young writer, but she is wonderfully talented.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly Enjoyable Review: In reading Jhumpa Lahiri's stories, I felt as satisfied as if I were reading Alice Munro's or Bharati Mukherjee's work. Lahiri has empathy for her characters as Munro does, and her stories turn on quiet but consequential revelations. One of the best new writers I have read in a long time.
Rating: Summary: One worth more than Amazon sells it for! Review: Jhumpa Lahiri writes with such vision and clarity of prose, it seems the stories she writes could not have been written another way. The stories and characters are so alive that I felt I was no longer reading, but rather witnessing them...standing just a few steps away from the characters.
