Summary: I Love Dr. Phil
Review: Although I don't have tons of time to do all the
"exercises" in this book or the workbook...it is an interesting introspective...if you are honest with yourself, you can get alot out of this book. It is worth the time and effort to do it - if you want to make some changes in yourself. It is time consuming and you must be committed. If you have seen Dr. Phil on Oprah, you know his style is very direct...the book is the same. It forces you to look deep within and figure out why you do the things you do...It is certainly cheaper than therapy:-) I am not completely finished with the book...but I've already learned a few things about myself...that needed to be learned.

Summary: I am enjoying this book
Review: I purchase this book after a friend mentioned it to me I also purchased the workbook.(still working on that one!) This book brought to light a lot of subjects. I was able to maybe redirect my thoughts about alot of things. One thing I will say with anyone's advice a person needs to read or listen take what they can move on and I think that's why I have enjoyed reading this book. I don't agree with everything. But I am not reading this book for the purpose of sole direction. However, I am reading to enlighten myself as with anything in life.

Summary: one counselor who is not full of crap
Review: I grant you, many psychologists are smary, touchy-feely and yet, strangely troubled people who don't seem to live in the real world. However, Dr. Phil isn't one of them. He is wonderfully down to Earth and has a "get with the program" style so that even a "manly-man" can appreciate and embrace his point-of-view. This book is full of good, solid information. It makes you take a hard look at yourself and your life. After you take that cold, hard look he refuses to allow yourself to feel guilty. There's no time for that, you are to move on, making the changes that will change *you* and your life, for good.

Summary: Becoming Your Own Hero
Review: Through his "Life Laws" Dr. Phil leads the reader in becoming responsible for their own life. I found Dr. Phil's straightforward style of "telling it like it is" helpful in bringing his message to the forefront in a precise and comprehensive way. Another excellent guidebook on living an effective and meaningful life is called "Working On Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane. I highly recommend both these books.

Summary: If you're ready, buy the book.
Review: My aunt was the one who first showed me this book. I was visiting her and she recommended it and let me read her copy. I rushed out an bought my own! Despite the know-it-all tones he takes, this book is VERY thorough. His ideas are sound, and if you put them into rpactice, things are great. His ideas change you. BUy this book, and try it for yourself. If you don't like it, I'm sure you have a friend who will benefit big-time from this book.

Summary: Wow What A Book
Review: I would recommend this to anyone who would like a little help in there life. The most I got out of this is You Get It or You Don't. And not aguing over little things anymore or "Things That Don't Matter.

Summary: Taken with a grain of salt, this is a good motivator...
Review: Get past the "know it all" narration of this book, and it can be very motivating. The constant drumming of "you're responsible for your life and the choices you make" were a refreshing dose of motivation I needed. Coming from a 12 step program, I find many of the exercises listed were something I did when I actually did the 12 steps. However, after reading so many spiritual books, I really enjoyed being reminded that my life is my responsibility, my choices are my responsibility, and I can make my life the way I want it. I did not do the exercises yet, but I have read 90% of the book, and plan to do the exercises over the next few weeks.

Summary: Dr. Phil knows his stuff
Review: This is a great book! When you do the homework assignments and really look at your life, it is easy to see the changes needed to make a difference. I am not saying that my life is suddenly all roses and happiness. But I am more consciencly aware of the things that are disfunctional and need to be cut to increase my happiness.

Summary: Phil tells it like it is..........
Review: .......and I love him for it!!! This book is for you if you are really willing to step up to the plate and take charge of your life. The first step, Phil will tell you, is to acknowledge your own personal responsibility. If you can do that, you are ready to follow Phil's "Life Laws" and change your life for the better. This self-help book puts YOU in the driver's seat.

Let me add that I normally HATE self-help books. Most are a bunch of hogwash, "feel-good" type books that don't really help the reader who is truly searching for answers and change. Phil's book, however, I keep coming back to when I need guidance or a few reminders of the direction I need to keep myself in. His "laws", when followed, really work.

I was first exposed to the ideas of Phil McGraw while I was out of work on sick leave and had time to watch Oprah. I instantly liked the honesty of his style. He may seem harsh, but he really wants to help people help themselves. At the time I first picked up this book I was battling cancer. Oddly enough, I reached a point in the book where an example was being given of a cancer patient with a similar cure rate as my own (basically pretty good, scary yes, but good). I realized that I had to look past my illness to the final goal of being cured and that I had to acknowledge that I was going to likely make it and simply go on living my life as usual instead of giving up. I can honestly say this book changed my approach to life and helped me get through a very difficult period.
