Rating: Summary: A great book for teenage boys Review: I read this book back in 1960 and thought it was
a good novel with mostly childish views of
society and militarism. It was and is, however,
an excellent action novel for teenage boys.
Rating: Summary: Bread and Circuses NOT! Review: An intriguing look at future society that reverses social decay through some highly plausible practices. Public corporal punishment, really holding adults responsible for there offspring (what a novel concept!), and requiring those who would seek public office as well as those who want a say in politics to earn there franchise. An excellent read at any level
Rating: Summary: Still Great after All These Years... Review: I first read Starship Troopers in 1963. I have read it at least 10 times since. I managed to get my sons to read it and my wife. Why? This is Heinlein at his best. Here is solid SF woven with thought-provoking ideas. Do I agree with the Master? Sometimes! but I find him more interesting every year as the world unfolds more in the vein of his ideas than ever. I have taught History of Personal Moral Philosphy. This is one of the texts. A must read for anyone willing to challenge their beliefs or anyone in for a great read. Science fiction at its best. (The movie will be crap, but I will see it anyway
Rating: Summary: One of the finest novels ever written. Review: Second only to his "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", this is one of Heinlein's best. Those just looking for a mindless action story and foolish enough to judge a book by it's cover will be disappointed. Starship Troopers is many things. It is the story of a young man finding his place in life. It also accurately recounts the eternal realities of a successful career in the military. And the book provides a thoughtful discussion of the reasons for having armies and governments, and how and when force should and should not be used. Moreover, the projections of future warfare are so accurate that Starship Troopers is still being used as a textbook in war colleges around the world. Those who couldn't cut it in the military may prefer the more recent (and endlessly pessimistic) imitation "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman, but Starship Troopers remains a far superior work. Ignore the travesty of a movie coming this year; read the brilliant book
Rating: Summary: Heinlein can do no wrong! Review: Only my sixth Heinlein novel and I can't believe I haven't rushed out to read all I could get my hands on. I had to read this one BEFORE the movie was released out of fear it would ruin it for me. Troopers was a gem! Far from the standard 'war in space' novels, you don't have to be a military enthusiast to thoroughly enjoy it. Read it, read it now. You'll be entertained from cover to cover..
Rating: Summary: Let's make sure what we're talking about here. Review: I wrote a review in April, which I just reread and discovered I gave Starship Troopers a 10. Surely as the sun will rise over Florida, this book is a 10, but only if only science fiction is considered. Let us not take leave of our senses. It ain't that good. If anyone really wants to know what I consider a 10, let them read All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, which is one of the best American novels of the 20th Century and a hell of an adventure tale in its own right. Starship Troopers is "solid gold Heinlein," but I'm downgrading my rating to a 6
Rating: Summary: Loved The Book!! - Disliked the ending! Review: I must admit, I read this book because I heared it was going to be a movie. I was under the impresion it would be a shoot'm up kinda novel, especialy based on the start (Whew!). I was suprised how it was more on the millitary mindset . It realy made me think again about the millitary, not as to join or not but, what people see in the service.
Well as to the ending, I want to know If there is another book that continues the saga?
Good Book!
To Sony: If you's Guyz mezz this one up... Get out of the movie buisness
Rating: Summary: One of my personal favorites. Review: I've started to hoard this book whenever I find it in print or at library sales (I have three copies currently); its that good! Hoarding helps me make it throught the periods when its out of print. I've read it dozens of times and will only throw a copy out when its falling apart. The ideas may be too strong for some in today's politically correct society, but so was a democracy 225 years ago. Heinlein always pushed the boundries. When you read it (not an IF thing), embrace the things you like about his political and moral philosophies and question your own opinions and beliefs on the things you don't agree with. Heinlein may not always be right, but he'll make you work to defend your own beliefs.
Heinlein's discussions of understanding and accepting bootcamp can be easily understood by anyone who played an organized sport and has experienced a "hump". I can't see the movie coming close to the book. At best the movie will be an action film documenting the mythical war described in the book. Kind of like a Dirty Harry movie trying to explain what being a cop is like. Entertaining, but not representative
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for its controversial ideas Review: Certainly the best of Heinlein's books I have read, this is one of the masters of Science Fiction when his ideas were fresh and new, not the subject of endless other books. And yes, it is a book about ideas, some of them quite extreme. It is not a book for readers with closed minds or who are easily offended, for Heinlein's unique beliefs are guaranteed to clash with the reader's in one way or another.
But for those who are not afraid to have their beliefs challenged, Starship Troopers presents a fascinating thesis in a believable, well written package. It is, as has been mentioned by many other reviewers, an excellent read regardless of whether you end up agreeing with any of the ideas presented within, and I believe that most people who are honest with themselves will find that many of its often radical notions resonate with them on a personal, if not political, level.
As a final note, none of the above applies to the movie, which I have not seen.
Rating: Summary: One of Heinlein's best Review: What? They are going to rape this novel like they did "Puppet Masters"? I thought they allready made most of this movie - it was called "Aliens". "Is this going to be a rescue mission or another bug hunt?"
I loved this book as a teenager when I first read it. Now that I go back and read it again, I get so much more out of it
