Summary: SIMPLY THE BEST
Review: This book was GREAT!!! The characters were great. The story-line was great. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: I know this story is real! Believe it!
Review: I lived in Savannah at the time that all of this took place, I remember this trial! I was there. I still have friends in Savannah that know (or knew) chaeacters that appear in this book.

Reading this book was like a magical journey back in time for me. People and places long since forgotten in the party going haze that was the 70's and 80's were brought back to life in the pages of "Midnight". Every couple of pages, I kept thinking "I'v been to that place, I knew someone just like that, I remember when that happened". It was just wonderfull to revisit such a magical time and place in my life without having to run into old girlfriends!

Many people have many different opinions about this book, some saying that characters like these just cant be real... Well, folks, THEY ARE!

Even if the story was bad, I personally would have still read this book, But this book is EXCELLENT so I have no reservations about recomending it to you.

P.S. Dont visit savannah, my friends tell me that the increased tourism is having an impact on the "quiet beauty" this town is known for. John Berrent is currently working on a book about New Orleans, Visit there instead, BUT READ THIS EXCELLENT BOOK!

Summary: incredibly intriguing
Review: midnight in the garden of good and evil is like one of those beautifully and intricatly woven spider webs dripping with dew that you find way back in the woods. needless to say i loved this book. it was so complicated and i though it was amazing how sometimes for two or three chapters it would completely forget about the story and go off and talk about something else. that was why i was so disapointed when i heard it was being made into a movie. it was impossible to capture that type of painstaking detail on screen. the characters who are amusing and eccentric on the page simply come off as overacted and ridiculous in the movie. every time i open my copy its like i just received a free plane ticket to savannah and i still hope to go there one day!

Summary: I thought the book was awesome, plenty of action and humor.
Review: The book was great! It was cleverly written, and extremely detailed. The story was so easy to follow, yet impossible to put down. John did a wonderful job telling the tale of real southerners. Although not all of us are that excentric. There were parts that were hillarious and overall it was just a briliant piece of work.

Summary: TORTURE!
Review: This is possibly the most boring book I have ever read. I honestly think that this is one of those books that everyone loves because they are told that they should. I did not believe many of Berendt's accounts. I found most of the characters suspiciously exaggerated and too bizarre to be real. I also had a very hard time believing that the people of Savannah embraced this stranger from the North into their tight knit community so easily and were so quick to give away their community's gossip and secrets.

Summary: A Wonderful Read
Review: This is a wonderful story as compelling as any fictional work and filled with many colorful characters. This is the kind of work that pushes the readers imagination to the limits.

Summary: Nonfiction? Are you sure?!
Review: This was one of the few books that I haven't been able to put down. The author paints a picturesque scene where everyone knows everyone else, and each person has some sort of skeletons in his closet. The eccentric character list creates an eclectic community. From the pompous Adlers, to the drag queen Lady Chablis, each has his own little nitch in the tightly nit community of Savannah. After reading this book, I still can't believe the collection of personal stories and folklore entangled into a murder story can be nonfiction. This definitely should be one book to withstand the ages!

Summary: If you want to fall asleep...
Review: I bought the cassette version of the book to entertain myself during a six-hour delay in the airport, so I had no choice but listening to it. The book is awful. The descriptions of Savannah are mildly interesting, but as the murder plot unfolds and one trial follows another, I got sleepier and sleepier, and mad as well, for having spent my money on this lousy book.

Don't read it!!!!! You have been warned...
