Rating: Summary: MYSTIFIED Review: What is it about Jude Deveraux's books that leave me cold - I mean other than poor writing and inane dialogue? This is the third book I've read by JD (over several years) and once again I feel I've wasted my money. Granted this "High Tide" didn't get too many glowing reviews (and I haven't checked the reviews of the other two books I read), but I think from now on I will pass on her books. There are too many great authors writing now whose work demand respect and their stories deliver, if not every time, almost every time. Buyer beware.
Rating: Summary: Exciting, but a little dissapointing Review: "High Tide" is certainly not Jude Deveraux's best. It was a good read and an adventurous book, but it was a little hard to believe. Towards the middle I found myself wondering if this was actually one of Deveraux's books. I had just finished "Sweet Liar" when I started reading this one, and I was halfway dissapointed.Fiona Burkenhalter is the famous designer of a hot new toy which has put the company she works for on the market. She is a true New Yorker, born and bred, and is more than a little upset when her boss sends her off to Florida on a fishing trip to handle an account with an old man who created a hit local TV show. The worst day of her life became even worse when she is arrested for smashing a life-like mechanical alligator, and meets the handsome Ace Montgomery. Fiona and Ace can't stand each other, especially when she finds out that he is to go on the fishing trip with her! When the old man is killed, she and Ace find themselves charged with murder! As they run from the law, she finds herself succumbing to Ace's famous Montgomery charm. They hide in everything from an old, musty cabin, to a 5 star hotel, to a retirement community. Following the trails of her favorite childhood story of modern pirates and treasure, they find themselves on the biggest adventure of their lives! If you are expecting a book like Deveraux's others, be prepared. It's mild compared to "Sweet Liar" and "Legends", but it's full of charm and adventure!
Rating: Summary: I was hoping for more... Review: Not what I was hoping for initially, but I am such a fan of Jude Deveraux's work that I read it through to the end. Accused of murder, Fiona and Ace are on the run in the Florida Everglades. Attempting to follow a bizarre mix of clues and childhood remembrances, the two team up to clear their names. While the story got tangled at times, I enjoyed it overall. The characters grew on me, and as a Barbie fan, I found all the comments about Barbie by Fiona (who works for a toy company) to be a riot! Not Deveraux's best work, but a good read for while you are waiting for her next book.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the money Review: this book was a waste of time and a waste of money. I've read other books by the same author but this one had no semblance of reality.
Rating: Summary: High Tide - The book did not go out when the tide came in. Review: High Tide was a good book. I love the Montgomerys and the Taggerts, although they were not the main focus of this book, with the exception of Ace Montgomery and brief mentions of the Montgomerys and the Taggerts. High Tide had a lot of suspense in it. Fiona Burkenhalter, a doll designer, was a doll herself and made for Ace Montgomery. I was glad they both washed up their respective fiances' or dates and settled for each other. The suspense was throughout the book and lasted until the end. Hide Tide definitely surfed the wave and survived the tide. Deveraux fans do not give up on Jude. Keep the faith and keep on buying and reading Ms. Deveraux's books. You will not be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing Review: Being a long time Deveraux fan, I found this book to be very disappointing. I had to keep referring to the cover to make sure it was really a Deveraux book! The story was good but the writing was disjointed. It was just not up to Jude's usual standard, historical or modern day. If this is someone's first time reading a Deveraux book and you were less than satisfied, please try again. She has written many excellant romance novels that will be worth your time.
Rating: Summary: In One Word - TERRIBLE! Review: This was the first book I've selected by author Jude Deveraux, and it will, without question, be the last! The setting and story idea intrigued me enough to stay with it; however, I have never read a published book that was so poorly written! I was actually stunned at the lack of creativity and spent most of my time agonizing over the poorly structured sentences, paragraph by paragraph, page by page - all the way through! In fact, I threw the book in the trash immediately upon completing it, too embarrassed to pass it along to ANYONE! I have read several reviews that indicate this does not reflect the author's usual good work. I'm afraid she won't get a second chance with me. My advice would be to get off the beach early and don't get caught by High Tide!
Rating: Summary: Suspense and Romance in the Florida Everglades Review: HIGH TIDE is the story of Fiona Burkenhalter, a successful New York business woman who had made her name in the toy manufacturing industry. Ace Montgomery, at first glance, appears to be a struggling man trying to build a business in the Florida everglades, focusing on a theme park devoted to the local animals of the area. The two of them are thrown together through a somewhat suspicious business deal, a fishing expedition, and the adventure starts when Fiona awakes on the boat with their host, Roy Hudson, lying dead on top of her. From then on, the two are on the run, suspects in a high profile murder, that has everyone guessing "where are they" and "why did they do it". There doesn't seem to be any way that they could clear their name. Then, slowly, as the two get to know each other, they figure out what connects the two of them to the murdered man, and Fiona learns that her childhood and the father she thought she knew, were all a bunch of lies, and with help from Ace, she learns who her father really was. This was my first Jude Deveraux book. I found it a fast read, with a lot of suspense and adventure and romance mixed in with it. Although I enjoyed reading the book, and was looking forward to each chapter's new twist in the plot, I found a lot of what happened to the characters was a little far-fetched and almost too convenient, for lack of a better word. There were too many twists and turns that somehow almost did not make this story believable to me. I would recommend this book for the exciting story line and fast read.
Rating: Summary: Not too impressed ! Review: I'm still waiting to find a really GOOD Jude Deveroux book!! I finished reading this book a few weeks ago and the longer I reflect on this book, the less I liked it! I bought the book mainly because I'd seen it in all the bookstores and newstands. A book by a popular contemporary author - I thought I'd give it a try! I bought it while on vacation. What a disappointment! I found myself somewhat entertained by the two main characters, Ace and Fiona but even that relationship was soooo predictable! At times I found the book confusing and downright dumb!! Why all the mystery during the first part of the book about WHO Kimberly was?? There were too many characters who were confusing at times and who really didn't enhance the story much. This was my second read by Jude Deveroux and I'm not that impressed. Maybe I should read some of her earlier books??
Rating: Summary: High Tide Review: High Tide was the first book that I've ever read by Jude Deveraux. I thought that the book was very well written and thoughtout. Ms. Deveraux keeps you guessing and anticipating all the way to the end. When Fiona woke up with a dead man on top of her, I thought that it had to be Ace. Only Ace was just as puzzled as Fiona was. Most of the book is spent in hide-out trying to find out who set them up. When my mom handed me the book and said,"Here, I thought you'd like this." I thought,"Oh, no. Not another sleazy sex novel." But it wasn't. The story really suprised me. Even though I've never read any books like High Tide before, it made me think about what I'm missing when I limit my collection. My favorite part of the book was on p. 318 when Ace finally said,"I love you," to Fiona. It should have happened sometime between the beginning and the middle, but once again Ms. Deveraux made me anticipate what was going to happen. All in all I loved the book and I've recommended it to many of my friends.
