Rating: Summary: Beautifully written Review: Memoirs of a Geisha is a lovely book full of colorful metaphors. I felt as though I was walking through life with young Chiyo/Sayuri. I learned a great deal about geishas through this story, and didn't want it to end.
Rating: Summary: It was absolutely captivating novel ; a real page turner Review: Memiors of a geisha by Arthur S. Golden was an absolutely breathtaking and captivating piece. It captures you page after page in the life a geisha. The best part of the novel I would have to say is all of the detail that he puts into the piece. The detail makes you feel like you are right inside of the story and that you are not left with any questions on what is going on in the book. Also what is so captivating about the novel is that the whole story seems like a true account of a real giesha which makes you wan to read cover to cover on what will happen to her . On the whole it was beautiful piece that had suspense , passion , and wonderful detail all brought in to one great novel that once you start to read is very hard to put down .
Rating: Summary: I didn't want it to end-I could have read a 1000 pages more Review: I can sum up Memoirs of a Geisha in a simple word: Breathtaking. I would literally hold my breath as I read every word, knowing that the next sentence would be even better than the last. I was amazed that a man, Arthur Golden, could so completly understand the complex inner workings of a woman as well as he did. There were times that I actually forgot that this was a work of fiction written by a historian. Instead I lost myself in a world so different from my own, yet still utterly captivating. I know that I'll be the first on line to buy Golden's next novel!!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful brilliant book Review: Well, this is one or the greatest book I've ever read, it takes you to Gion, with Gieshas and you see the life of Sayuri, I really recomend it, it's beautiful!
Rating: Summary: REALITY as it is! Review: When I started reading this book, I realized how much it touched reality.. the real life, the real culture, the real ideas and poeple of a country over a period of time. This is a part romance, part historical novel that is very enjoyable. The writer has certinaly got great skills, for he's got a real good imagination, and an even better way of capturing the way children think and picture things in their everyday life.
Rating: Summary: what, exactly, is all the fuss about? Review: sometimes I think if enough people rave about a certain thing, others are hesitant to express a different opinion, lest they are seen as "wrong" or, worse, having not "gotten it"-- that is, the point of the book. Well, I'm sorry, but after hearing so many people proclaiming this novel as the best ever, I didn't expect to disagree. But, I do. This novel was okay. Period. The characters seemed shallow, the plot was... well, to be honest, I can't think of one. It was slightly on the boring side as well. I'm so glad I didn't spend the money on it!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful story... One of the best novels so far Review: This is one of the best novels I have read so far. The story is beautiful and well-crafted. I was completely immerse into the story and share Sayuri's joy, pain, sorrow as though they are my own. Great work. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends.
Rating: Summary: This book is absolutely amazing! Review: The author is very poetic and descriptive. It draws you in and you cannot put the book down. I cannot wait for his next novel. You must read this book...it is excellent!
Rating: Summary: 2 thumbs up, excellent reading Review: I borrowed this book from a friend and kept it for a while before opening it. When I did open it I guess you could say I didn't want to close it. I just couldn't put it down. I felt drawn to Japan and led to the teahouses alongside Sayuri, a real eye opener to the life of a Geisha. The romance with the Chairman was not as dramatic as I expected.. having waited for this moment all her life... Anyway if you like a good book this is one.
Rating: Summary: Good first glimpse into the world of geisha - Review: This book, despite its many flaws (above all the less-than-fair descriptions of Japanese male characters), is a good attempt to shed light on the often mysterious and misunderstood world of geisha. Geisha is a form of art and an eloquent expression of culture - not a high-class call girl service many Westerners' wishful thinking has led them to believe. The author quite capably describes Sayuri's life as an artist and an embodiment of amazing tradition.
