Rating: Summary: A Realistic Book Review: I enjoyed the main character of Cannie- mostly because I could relate to her. I felt that she made real-life decisions that a woman of today would make in her shoes. There were a couple times during this book, where I thought I could see the plot turning to go one way...and if it had gone that way- I would have been disappointed to say the least...and I can not even begin to tell you how delighted I was when the plot developments didn't turn the stereotypical way. I don't want to ruin the story by telling you exactly what I mean, but I am sure that readers will pick up on it as well. I recommend this book highly. It did not disappoint, unlike the other books I bought in this shipment.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best! Review: This book was great! It was hilarious and touching and I found it hard to put down. Frankly, I am stunned at the few people who have given this book a bad review. It's a great book and Jennifer Weiner's second book is equally as satisfying!
Rating: Summary: don't expect to be entertained Review: I picked up the book after reading the glowing review, describing it as "witty, feisty and funny", hoping that I would get entertained reading it. I was wrong, the book is anything but all that. The writing gets from Ok to bland to just plain ramblings. The almost-autobiographical-sounding rambling doesn't lend any depth to the story, it makes the book just plain annoying. it's a pain reading that book, and the only reason I finished reading it is for the ending, which I must say, for lack of a better word, boring. The only good thing about this book is the catchy title, which I think is just a marketing gimmick. Don't bother with this book, it's not worth it.
Rating: Summary: A book with it all! Review: What a wonderful, easy, and entertaining read. This book brings you through everything - living, learning, loving, and then passing it all on. I found myself feeling exactly like the main character did in certain scenes, but then wanted to smack her and tell her to "smartin' up" in others! Parts of this book made me laugh so hard that I woke up my husband. Most of my reading is done at the end of a busy day and brain doesn't want to work too hard! I spent 3 nights in a row, up until 2 a.m. reading this book. I didn't not want to put it down. I loved it!
Rating: Summary: finally a book that is so real Review: i felt like this was me. i could so relate to cannie's weight struggles. this is such a feel good book. i could not put it down and i plan on passing this along to most of my freinds. cannie goes through what i believe most women feel at some point in thier lives or for some thier entire life. this book made me feel so good and so liberated. a bigger women can be sexy, seductive, gorgeous, and very much wanted.
Rating: Summary: Wish fulfillment gone wrong Review: Had this book been eradicated of any mention of Los Angeles or Hollywood, it would have been good. Unfortunately, what started out as an identifiable story about a 20-something girl who is struggling through life turned into an unrelatable and contrived fairy tale resembling a paper I wrote in 8th grade (the paper had me meeting my idol - Joey McIntyre - and being whisked away to a life of front-row concert tickets, limosine rides and make-out sessions). The whole "celebrities are people, too" thing was taken way too far and it ruined this book for me. In addition, it served up a neat solution to all of Cannie's (the main character) problems. We're supposed to feel proud that she came out on top after a series of pitfalls. But I'd come out on top, too, if I had a rich and well-connected friend to clean up all of my messes with her checkbook. Ironically, at the end of the book, Cannie refers to a story she wrote as "wish fulfillment" and expresses surprise that others have found depth in her characters. That's art imitating life if I ever saw it.
Rating: Summary: GOOD to read IN BED..... Review: This is one of those great books that are perfect for when you want a long bath, your favorite jammies, and to mindlessly immerse yourself in someone elses' life. I don't have the time or mental fortitude lately to dive into anything too heavy; but didn't want to read something entirely trite or mindless either. (As I write this one of my toddlers is trying to tie his sister into a human pretzel....CLEARLY Ian McEwan is not happening for me this week.) This was a great choice. This is a book that will entertain and leave a smile on your face instead of your brain grappling to discern the hidden meaning in the author's setting choice. It's simply a very good book.
Rating: Summary: Good at first - But then I have issues Review: My book club had a month where we would read books that we were "ashamed to want to read". That meant a month dedicated to chick-lit. We had heard that this was the most un-chick-lit book of the bunch and decided to give it a try. Let me say that that is chick-lit. Yes, there are some twists and turns and a life crisis, but overall this is the same old story. Amazingly good things keep happening to the heroine that would never occur in real life. In addition, horrible awful things happen that are not really explainable. Everyone keeps writing about how they love the heroine in this story. Honestly at first I totally related to her. She was strong and fun and honest, but after a while I just started to say "get over yourself and move on". I'm giving this book three stars for the first 200 pages. I thought it was fun for a while, then it just tried to get too deep.
Rating: Summary: A good beach book Review: I truly enjoyed this book! It can be hard to find a book that is an easy, entertaining read, without being too stupid or cliche. This book fits the bill. The plot gets a bit fanciful at times, and there are some serious/sad moments, but overall it is funny, smart, and entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to read about places I know. I feel anyone can relate to this book. It made me laugh and it made me cry. Is it "chick fiction"? Yes, it is. But, Ms. Weiner gives chick fiction a whole new meaning with this book. I was unable to put it down and read it in less than a day. It is very gripping, so only read when you have several hours to spare. Just be sure to have a box of Kleenex handy. Cannie was very funny. The characters in this book are so well written it is like people you know. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
