Summary: More of an auto-biography than a book on Leadership
Review: Interesting book, although it could have been shorter. Something that seemed conspicuously absent was mistakes he made and how he might have become a better leader by learning from them. His inside look at the tragedy of Sept 11 was very interesting and brought back a lot of memories and emotions. Thoroughly enjoyed reading about the recovery efforts.

Review: If you think Giuliani is a truly great leader, consider these facts..From his first days in office in 1994, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been preoccupied with restricting artists' freedom of expression. Before ordering his crackdowns on squeegee guys, hookers, marijuana smokers, community gardens, art museums or the homeless, his 40,000 strong army of police was ordered to arrest the City's street artists. Before the First Amendment battles in which Giuliani tried to close down the peepshows and topless bars of Times Square to make way for Disney; before he banned press conferences by political opponents on the steps of City Hall; before he tried to enforce obscure prohibition era laws that made dancing in bars illegal, Giuliani was in Federal court trying to eliminate all First Amendment protection for visual art. Review: Rudy, you showed the world what leadership was all about on 9/11 but you have shown us the elements of leadership in this remarkable book. I recommend this book wholeheartedly if you are new to leadership or if you are an old timer open to growth. I also recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self, a superlative resource for individual, leadership and corporate optimization

Summary: Everyone can be a Leader, but there's only one Giuliani
Review: "Leadership" is an excellent resource for anyone who seeks
to manage, lead, or instill organization into their own lives.
Written in a style reflective of Giuliani's friendly yet steely
personality, it provides an excellent overview of his political
philosophy, decision making skills, and of course his historic
leadership following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Until reading the book, I had forgotten how dire the conditions were in New York City prior to Rudy's election in 1993 - over 9,000 felonies per week! He details how he put plans into action
and demanded accountability from everyone in the system, which often required enormous political strength. Being a Republican mayor in a city that is nearly 80% Democrat is enormously difficult. But Rudy explains how he relied on his priciples, moral beliefs and formed relationships with political enemies by
trusting those who were trust worthy and always being open to discussion. These principles and beliefs were evident during the leadership exercised during 9-11.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in a political or management career, or anyone who wants to learn more about this great American.

Summary: A self proclaimed hero
Review: It's sad how politicians become heroes during tragic times. 911 glorified Giuliani and made him an hero whose rating was plunging south. Although he deserve for his efforts in bring down the crime but it was the strong economy boom in the 90's that was more of a factor. He does not deserve to be called a Leader. Anyone in his place would have done the same. Rather the hard working New Yorker including the Firefighters/Police men who deserve to be called True Leader.

Summary: A great leader when we needed him most!
Review: Most people would be hard pressed to criticize the leadership of Mayor Giuliani during and after 911. I respect him and enjoyed every page of this book. I also recommend Leadership and the One Minute Manager if you are interested in leading others.

Summary: Highly Recommended
Review: After seeing New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani give a speech at the University of California, Los Angeles, going over some of the characteristics a leader holds, I had to buy this book. One characteristic he focused on (but was not included as much in the book) was the quality of staying positive. Giuliani states that a leader is someone others will follow. Let's say, for instance, that you state that things are going to get worse, there is no way to improve things... so follow me. The crowd was in awe: of course no one would follow such a leader. One would be an idiot for doing so. As Giuliani states in the book, however, if a leader has conviction, holds strong principles, and says they have a positive plan so follow me . . . people will listen and follow. There is a lot of psychology imbedded in the mayor's ideas. Although he's not a psychologist by trade, I'm sure a lot of the experience he has had over the years has allowed him to notice how people act. This is a very practical book and I'd highly recommend it to a leader of any kind, nonprofit, corporate, whether they are a conservative or liberal: it really makes no difference. A great book, Mr. Mayor of the World!

Summary: A True Leader
Review: "It was an exceptionally clear summer morning. The skyline was surreally beautiful against a backdrop of the purest blue. No matter what day it is, New York City is a unique place, but on mornings like September 11 it was truly special." It's common knowledge that New York City is the economic center of the world. The World Trade Center stood for some of the fundamental principles these United States are found on. The first and last chapters of this book (the day of September 11 and the aftermath) paint a vivid and horrifying portrait of a city in ruins. Seeing through the eyes of "America's Mayor" is stunning and it brings fresh meaning to the comic book quote "with great power comes great responsibility." Those two chapters unaccompanied make the book meaningful. The chapters in between, though on a historical scale much less significant, are just as extraordinary when analyzing leadership aptitude.
When I first selected this book, I thought it would be another rehash of a political figure telling us why he is such a superb leader, but, to my astonishment, it's much more. Giuliani essentially lays out a system to successful leadership. He makes no assertion that he is the greatest; in actual fact, he gives much of the acclaim to others. As an alternative of telling us how grand of a leader he is, he humbles himself in the opening dedication. "This book is dedicated to all the people described in these pages, whom I leaned on and learned from - it was them that I derived the strength to lead"
The book divulges that Giuliani's leadership began long before the "Attacks on America." In the beginning you could ask, how was Mayor Giuliani able to defy the odds in a democratic city and become the republican mayor? Then, how was he able to cleanup the streets of New York like no predecessor before him could? Finally and most daunting, how did he pull the economic center of the world back together in the midst of the most incredible act of terrorism in the history of the civilized world? One word, LEADERSHIP.
This book is an exceptional read for anybody; moreover, it should be mandatory text for all political figures. Mayors, Governors, and even Presidents could gain knowledge from Giuliani's experience as Mayor of New York City.

Summary: Very good book
Review: I really enjoyed this book. The only problem I found with it was that there seemed to bea lot of personal stories that were there just to pad the book. Giuliani is one of my favorite politicians and I did learn a lot of techniques to use to create a great process. As far as leading men it lacks a lot. I recommend The Art of War for learning to lead and motivate people.
